Gamers have found a surprisingly simple way of bringing Intel’s new-gen XeSS 3 upscaling technology to last-gen hardware a little earlier than expected. Intel did recently confirm that XeSS 3 with Multi Frame Generation will be coming to the Arc B580 in February, but while we wait for that, Redditors have discovered simply switching a few files does the trick.

We have already seen XeSS 3 demonstrated on Panther Lake. The mobile architecture is generally designed for lightweight laptops, though the presence of upscaling and multi frame generation on day one proves to make these “Thin & Light” devices viable for gaming, and Intel has also announced Panther Lake-powered handhelds, coming at a later date.

How to use XeSS 3 early on older architectures

Using a workaround to bring XeSS 3 files for Panther Lake to older ‘legacy’ architecture, gamers are now able to run XeSS 3 on desktop and handheld hardware before Intel brings official support later this month. Someone has already demonstrated performance on their B580 using the in-game Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark. Users over on the MSI Claw subreddit also report success using it on their handheld device.

Here’s how they achieved it:

  1. Download the latest Intel driver (files also available here)
  2. Extract the package to a folder using 7-Zip
  3. Open the folder named ‘8362’
  4. Find igxell.dll & igxess_fg.dll
  5. Copy both of these DLL files into the ‘8462’ folder, and overwrite when prompted
  6. Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to uninstall current graphics driver and IGS (Intel Graphics Software)
  7. Install the driver from the extracted folder and ignore the warning upon installation

It should be noted that XeSS 3 uses the same fundamental AI upscaling model as XeSS 2, so static quality should remain the same, though the introduction of Multi Frame Generation can help improve perceived image quality via increased fluidity.

Back when Intel announced XeSS 3 in October last year, the company revealed the technology would be available to all Arc GPUs with XMX hardware in due time. For reference, this includes the older Arc A-Series graphics cards and Core Ultra 200 series integrated graphics.
