There may be a time when SSD prices return to whatever ‘normal’ is…or becomes. But until then, elevated prices remain the reality, making discounts worth paying attention to. That’s why we’re highlighting this one on the SSD 990 1TB from Samsung. The 990 NVMe line arrived in the summer to provide an alternative in a stricken market. And right now, the SSD 990 1TB beats both the 990 PRO and 990 EVO Plus 1TB on price. Amazon has it at a relatively decent $190.

Why we’d pick the Samsung 990 1TB

A decent-ish price

Telling someone last year that $190 was okay value for a fast 1TB NVMe drive would have seemed bizarre. But the truth is that this drive is less expensive than Samsung’s other 990 options, and that alone makes it a good pick if you want reliability and strong performance across both sequential and random read and write.

Fast 1TB storage

Speed-wise, the 990 1TB is a PCIe Gen 4 SSD that can reach up to 7,150MB/s and 6,450 MB/s sequential read and write, and up to 700K and 1,100K IOPS random read and write. Those numbers are strong in 2026 and make the SSD suitable for use as a boot drive, storage expansion drive, or gaming library.

Somewhat power-conscious

The 990 1TB isn’t as high-performance as the 990 PRO 1TB. However, it is more power-conscious, with Samsung noting that the former has around “38% improved performance per watt” over the faster drive. That’s useful if you’re mindful of how much power your PC uses and want to strike a bit of balance between that and performance needs.

What to consider before you buy

Price, price, price. This deal does offer a bit of a better price with the 17% discount. And if you want a 1TB Samsung SSD, then this may be the most cost-effective option right now. We should note that Black Friday is only around a month away, even though there’s no guarantee it will shift a stagnant SSD market. But if you need a drive right now, this may be one of the best NVMe SSD picks considering the discount.
