Gamers don’t necessarily need Nvidia’s midrange graphics cards. That’s been the key learning from AMD’s RX 9000 Series, and current pricing is helping to prove the point. While the RTX 5070 currently asks $800 or more, the non-XT RX 9070 is available for far less. Specifically, Asus’ Prime Radeon RX 9070 EVO OC Edition is now at $630 at Amazon. Granted, that’s not the $550 MSRP, but it’s closer than it’s been so far this year. And if you want a killer 1440p GPU with some 4K potential, it looks like the best of a pricey bunch.

Why we’d pick the Asus’ Prime Radeon RX 9070 EVO OC Edition

A clear winner in performance per dollar

For gamers, the RTX 5070 doesn’t make sense right now. AMD’s RX 9070 is better in pure rasterization, with third-party testing putting its performance at around 9-15% ahead of Nvidia’s card. The RTX 5070 may claim the occasional victory in some titles, yet that alone isn’t worth the near-$200 increase over the Prime RX 9070 at this deal price. And neither, in our view, is Nvidia’s DLSS and multi-frame gen performance; AMD’s FSR 4 is pretty good these days.

More efficient than AMD’s own RX 9070 XT

With all things being equal, and MSRPs actually being viable, the RX 9070 XT would be just $50 more expensive than the RX 9070. That’s an easy ask for extra performance. But (card depending) the RX 9070 XT is approximately $100 more than the deal price we’re seeing here. And the XT is less efficient in terms of performance per watt, pulling 304W versus the 9070’s 220W. So in overall value, the Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 out-AMDs AMD here.

Healthy 16GB VRAM capacity

With another nail in the RTX 5070 coffin, the Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 EVO OC Edition has that healthy 16GB of VRAM. That’s a forward-facing capacity that gives gamers more resilience for future titles. When complex graphics demand more memory from gaming graphics cards, the RX 9070 is already well-equipped. Right now, the 16GB helps with 1440p performance, where this card thrives, but it also helps with 4K where smooth gaming is possible in some titles.

What to consider before you buy

The big caveat is that we’d wholly recommend this deal to gamers seeking the best value for money in a 1440p-focused card… but not to anyone depending on Nvidia CUDA cores or the Nvidia feature set for specific content creation, encoding/decoding, or machine learning and AI workloads. If you’re a professional who needs best efficiency in those areas, Nvidia makes sense. But at this deal price, the RX 9070 is a fantastic pick, and the Asus Prime card looks the part too. Does it make our best graphics cards for gaming list? Not quite, but the deal certainly gets our vote.
