AMD’s Ryzen 9 9900X is the CPU you pick if you want fantastic productivity performance for the years to come. Historically regarded as ‘bad value’ for gamers, it’s not the processor you’d pick for that focus. However, it can support gaming if that is a secondary priority. Most importantly, it is now $335 at Amazon, which is well below its $500 list price. So if content creation, editing, encoding, compiling, or multi-core workloads are your go-to, read on.

Why we like the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X

Excellent productivity

For consumers and enthusiasts, the Ryzen 9 9900X delivers a level of productivity that will be hard to demand more of. Our 2025 hands-on review explained that power efficiency capped its potential, but time (and motherboard BIOS updates) have been kind to the 9900X. Unless you demand professional-grade multi-core processing, this CPU is a prime pick.

Well-positioned

Faced with proving itself against the 7000 Series (and standing out from its current-gen siblings), the 9900X is in a good spot with this deal. It’s just $20 more than its 7900X predecessor, and it offers better performance and power efficiency. It’s also only $40 more than the 9700X, but offers four more cores, which will matter in heavier workloads.

Decent for gaming

The Ryzen 9 9900X, like AMD’s 9000 Series processors in general, is a solid CPU for supporting gaming. It’s not a gaming CPU, though. Yes, it will easily support today’s best graphics cards. And if you also use your PC for gaming, then this deal makes sense. But only as a secondary task.

What to consider before you buy

One more time, for gamers: the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the best CPU for gaming. The Ryzen 9 9900X is a multi-core workhorse for users who do not want to spend $500 or more on a processor. The current deal has the 9900X at one of its lowest prices to date, which is really strong value. If you build a cost-focused productivity machine around the 9900X and take up this deal, you can expect strong performance for a long time. Plus, the bonus of potential drop-in upgrades with the next generation, too.
