Samsung Odyssey gaming monitors have a lot going for them, and their ultrawide options are a popular choice for those looking for a display for a more immersive gaming experience. This Odyssey 40-inch G7 gaming monitor gives you that epic sense of immersion, with a 1000R curve and crisp WUHD resolution, and features a 180Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium Pro, for superior HDR performance. Speaking of HDR, it’s also earned a VEA DisplayHDR 600 rating, which is a level up from your typical gaming monitor, and means you can expect deep blacks, amazing color, and bright highlights. It’s currently a whopping $504 off, and has been reduced from $1,999.99 to $695.99 on Amazon; it’s the lowest price of the year so far.

This monitor is going to be ideal for those looking for a truly immersive gaming experience, and would pair well with a high-end build. It’s also a good shout for well-lit rooms, as it has a bright LED screen, rather than a somewhat dimmer OLED panel. For daytime usage or rooms with loads of natural light sources, this is a great way to go.

Key features of this Samsung 40″ Odyssey G7 gaming monitor

WUHD resolution on a 40-inch curved screen

This monitor comes in at WUHD resolution, which is 5120 x 2160 pixels, which is like a 4K display that’s extended horizontally. This is brilliant if you want a wider field of view when gaming, but still want exceptional 4K quality when gaming. Its curve comes in at 1000R, which is actually quite steep compared to other curved monitors, and is designed with immersive gaming in mind.

180Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium Pro

This monitor’s refresh rate allows you to game at up to 180fps, which is a decent level that’s not overkill for most 4K-ready gaming PCs. With FreeSync Premium Pro, gameplay is going to be very fluid and tear-free, as it features both low-framerate compensation and technology that reduces lag and latency, which can be caused when HDR is enabled in-game.

VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification

Most good gaming monitors have a VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, so this Samsung Odyssey display is actually a level up from that. In short, it’s an indicator of how good this monitor’s HDR performance is, and means that you can expect deep blacks, very bright highlights, and excellent color, all of which lend themselves to creating much more lifelike picture quality.

LED panel

So this monitor is more reasonably priced than your typical 40-inch option as it opts for an LED display, rather than a mini-LED or OLED. The good news is that these are still very strong options to go for and, as mentioned with this monitor’s HDR rating, are capable of delivering lifelike visuals. One advantage of these types of monitors over OLEDs is that, since they’re backlit, they’re usually far brighter. This helps with color volume, but importantly, it means that you’re getting a higher typical brightness across the monitor itself, which means that they’re usually better suited for well-lit rooms.

Things to consider

I’d say one thing you definitely want to consider here is whether you’re going to be using this monitor for more than just gaming. While steep 1000R curves are epic for immersion, they’re not ideal for some other usages. You could probably get away with doing some vudoe editing on this monitor, as its wider setup gives you enough room for the video itself and all the UI and editing tools on the same screen, but for graphic deisgn and photo editing, ro anthing that will eventually end up on a flat surface, the curve is likely to make your life a little harder, as it may distort what you’re working on. For hybrid use, your best bet is to go for a large 32-inch 4K monitor, and see if you can grab one that’s QD-OLED for roughly the same price. A quick search on my end pulled up this LG UltraGear monitor on Amazon, which would be a very strong alternative in my opinion.
