Lexar’s NM790 SSD range is a decent pick for most modern systems, especially if you don’t need workstation speed. And with SSD prices staying high in 2026, we’re happy to highlight a new lower price for the NM790 2TB. After consecutive price drops, the 2TB SSD is now at its best price since April; not undoing all the price hikes, but still in a better way. Right now, the PCIe Gen 4 drive is $300, $150 below the current $450 list price.

Why we’d pick the Lexar 2TB NM790 SSD

Fast PCIe Gen 4.0 performance

For expanding a current PC (or building a new one), this PCIe Gen 4.0 SSD offers speeds up to 7400 MB/s and 6500 MB/s read and write, respectively, and good all-around performance. It’s not as fast as some premium drives, but that’s not enough to worry about in daily use unless you want unfettered speed and to spend more (the Samsung 990 2TB is currently $40 more).

It’s good for PC and laptop storage

The most obvious home for this drive may be a PC, but if you want a new NVMe laptop drive, then the NM790’s single-sided design suits tighter spaces. The NM790 2TB is also highly efficient – Lexar says it draws 40% less power than DRAM cache-enabled PCIe Gen 4 SSDs – and therefore it stays relatively cool under load. So it’s a flexible option for wherever you need it.

Suitable for PS5 storage expansion

With the NM790 2TB being a solid drive for gamers, PC enthusiasts, and laptop users, it’s also a good pick for PlayStation 5 storage expansion, whether that’s adding 2TB to a regular PS5 or doubling the existing capacity of a PS5 Pro.

What to consider before you buy

Recent SSD deals have made it a little easier to choose based on your priority when picking a drive. Although pricing is still high, the Lexar NM790 represents a value-oriented option compared to, say, the Samsung 990 and 990 Pro variant SSDs. That puts it in a good spot, with the NM790 2TB at $300 being better value than the 1TB at $200. It may not quite be one of the best NVMe SSDs for performance, but its value is clear, and its all-around performance and reliability are well known.
