Prime Day is just around the corner, but there are already some cracking deals to be had ahead of the event, especially on gaming monitors. This Samsung 27-inch Odyssey G7 is well worth a look with its current 35% discount, as it’s now dropped to just $389.99. I say ‘just’ as this is actually one of the more expensive types of gaming monitors you can get, as it’s dual resolution. Essentially, it’s two monitors in one; one for slower-paced, story-driven gaming where higher settings and 4K resolution are best, and one for competitive gaming where it’s all about high framerates.

Samsung 27” Odyssey G7 G70F

FHD Resolution Gaming Monitor, Fast IPS Dual Mode, 4K 180Hz Refresh Rate, NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, Ergonomic Stand, LS27FG706ENXZA

This monitor is actually quite affordable for a 4K/FHD display, and of course, it scales back in a couple of areas. That being said, it does tick all the most important boxes for gaming as you’ll see below, and is at price point that makes it a smart move for more cost-effective 4K gaming setups, or simply those who may want something for high fps gaming in FHD, but also a 4K display for non-gaming tasks, like watching content, productivity, and even a touch of design work.

Read on for my take on this monitor’s key features, pricing history, and more deals.

Key features of this Samsung 27-inch Odyssey G7 gaming monitor

Dual mode resolution

So you’re getting 4K at 180Hz, and FHD at 360Hz here, which is good, but not overkill, offering that aligns with most mid-range gaming PCs. 360Hz at FHD is a winner for competitive gaming, in particular, and it’s going to help give you a bit of an edge in first-person shooters and other fast-paced titles.

FreeSync Premium

This is a good feature to have as it’s a level-up from your standard gaming monitor. Basically, it’s the mid-tier of adaptive sync technology from AMD, so, on top of reducing screen tearing and stutter, it also has low-framerate compensation, which kicks in when framerates drop below this monitor’s minimum refresh rate. For competitive gaming, it’s genuinely useful.

HDR 10

This is the one area that this monitor scales back on. HDR 10 compatibility sounds pretty good, but it’s actually quite standard. It means this monitor can accept HDR metadata, but in a more basic form. That means that it can showcase games in HDR, but at a fixed setting, rather than frame-by-frame. It’s not bad, but something with HDR10+ would be superior for making games and content look more cinematic and lifelike.

Fast IPS panel

This is another area that helps keep this monitor more affordable, and in all honesty, it’s still pretty good. OLEDs are great, but they’re expensive, especially when dual mode, but Fast IPS panels still deliver good color, brightness, contrast, and viewing angles, and are often notably responsive and speedy, which is why they’re often used for high refresh rate displays.

Is it a good time to buy?

It’s a good time to buy, for sure, especially as it’s not far off its lowest price through Beach Camera Same Day Shipping. You may be able to get this a touch lower on Prime Day, but I personally wouldn’t think it would be by much. I’d say that it’s worth shortlisting this and some similar models from the likes of LG if you’re set on a dual-mode monitor for under $400.
