Best AMD Ryzen 7000 series laptop in 2023
- Hugely powerful core components
- 240Hz 1440p display with decent response time
- Expansive RAM and storage options
- Not too expensive for such a powerful laptop
- Screen brightness could be better
- Not as good build quality as other premium models
The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 is the most powerful gaming laptop in the ASUS range. It comes with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor, which is the best multicore performer money can buy and comparable to Intel’s most powerful in single core performance, but with greater energy efficiency and without the thermal throttling issues of the blue team’s flagship. GPU options include either the RTX 4080 (ideal for gamers) or RTX 4090 (ideal for a workstation laptop you also want to game on, but probably a bit overkill for just gaming).
The 240hz 17-inch screen has a decent response time of 5-6ms, making it ideal for gaming on. The 300nits peak brightness of the display is good enough for gaming indoors, though not hig enough for outdoor use. Although this isn’t a machine geared towards creatives, it still has good color gamut coverage (100% sRGB and 97% DCI-P3 specifically).
The build quality of the chassis is notably plastic compared to the more metallic premium models out there from other brands, however this does make it more affordable, and though it’s still an expensive device, compared to the competition with same specs it’s actually somewhat reasonably priced.
- Very reasonably priced for what you get
- 240Hz 1440p display with decent response time
- Good color replication
- Screen brightness could be better
- Mediocre build quality
Very similar to our top pick, this non-SCAR variant of the ASUS ROG Strix is another 17-inch gaming laptop, but with lower RAM and SSD expansion options, slightly worse build quality, aesthetics and cooling, and lower SKU GPU options. The display however remains the same and you can still equip it with the most powerful AMD Ryzen 7000 processors.
For an upper-midrange gaming laptop, the RTX 4070 variant is a great pick, making a high performing gaming machine when paired with the AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX CPU. You can even find some options with the more powerful Ryzen 9 7945HX for not too much more money.
All told, the ASUS ROG Strix line with 40-series GPUs have been some of the best value gaming performers of 2023, and this is one of the best examples.
- Good value for money
- Respectable battery life for a gaming laptop
- Good keyboard
- Good expandability for RAM & SSD
- Screen wobble
- Poor brightness & color replication
Lenovo IdeaPads feature on many of our pages when it comes to the best affordable laptops, and this Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 is a great gaming option, with a power/price ratio greater than most laptops out there. The machine comes packing with an AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS processor – a great mid-range performer, plus one of the new Nvidia RTX 4050 graphics cards (laptop version), which performs only slightly below an RTX 3060, and that’s before you factor in the performance benefits of DLSS 3.0, which can bring it to about on par depending on the game.
The battery life runs to about 6 hours, thanks to the Ryzen processor, which is fairly respectable for a gaming laptop. The keyboard is also surprisingly good, and you get plenty of expandability with the two DDR5 slots and M.2 slots.
Although the 120Hz refresh rate of the display is plenty when gaming at this level, it’s a bit lacking in other areas. Brightness caps out at 270nits and, although sRGB coverage usually isn’t a priority if you’re only after a gaming laptop, the roughly 50% sRGB coverage on this machine is so low you can notice a difference even when gaming – with colors lacking vibrancy. The screen hinge is also a bit on the loose side, which means any movement of the surface you’ve got the laptop on or of the laptop itself (if you’re a heavy-handed typer) will cause some screen wobble.
Still, besides these factors, it’s a terrific budget-friendly gaming laptop and we heartily recommend it.
- Unique secondary touchscreen
- Powerful GPU & CPU options
- Fantastically bright miniLED 1600p main display
- 100% sRGB & DCI-P3 coerage with high color accuracy
- Plentiful storage & RAM options
- Very expensive
- Trackpad placement no good for the left-landed
This 2023 variant of the ASUS Zephyrus Duo 16 comes with the classic dual-screen form factor that the series is known for – offering a unique smaller 4K touchscreen below the main 1600p display that is ideal for putting your editing timeline on when using video editing / animation software and the like, or the window of your streaming software whilst you game. This, plus the powerful core components and color-accurate main display, make it the ideal premium laptop for creatives and streamers.
All options come loaded with an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, and you can purchase either the Nvidia RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 graphics cards with it, with the lower Nvidia SKUs probably coming out in the future.
The main display is a brilliant mini-LED panel, with a great 700 nits peak brightness (or 1400 nits when viewing HDR content) which means you can easily use it outside on a sunny day. It has a 240Hz refresh rate as well as FreeSync and G-Sync, making it great for gaming. You get 100% gamut coverage of both the sRGB and DCI-P3 spectrums, with a high degree of color accuracy, meaning it’s great for color-based workflows.
The only two downside of this machine are the high price tag (you pay a premium for the unique functionality combined with high performance), and the fact that the trackpad (which doubles as a numpad) is off to the right side of the keyboard, which renders it a bit useless for lefties, but then again you can just use a mouse if you need to.
What to think about when looking to buy AMD Ryzen 7000 series laptops
AMD Ryzen 7000 series laptop CPUs vs Intel 13th gen laptop CPUs
Although it’s a close race in many areas, and ultimately depends on the SKU, overall the AMD Ryzen range have the edge over the 13th gen Intel models this year. Although the gap in battery life between the two companies offerings has narrowed this generation, the Ryzen CPUs still have a slight edge. In terms of straight FPS performance in games / processing performance in workstation tasks – some Intel win-out, some AMD win-out, but the decider comes down to the high heat output of the Intel processors, thanks to their fairly overloaded design still using older architecture. Whilst manageable in desktops in laptops this can often lead to thermal throttling, and therefore a reduction in performance under heavy strain and also the longevity of the components.
