The naming scheme might be a little confusing, but Apple has launched two new MacBook Pro laptops featuring upgraded versions of its latest-generation M5 chip. The two new chips in question are called the M5 Pro and M5 Max. In this article, we’re going to explain everything there is to know about the MacBook Pro M5 Pro and MacBook M5 Pro, including release date, specs, and price details. The new higher-end models joined the standard MacBook Pro M5, which was released in October last year.

Expanding the M5 series comes as part of a week of new Apple product launches, which has already seen the announcement of a new budget smartphone, the iPhone 17e, as well as a new iPad Air powered by M4. Apple’s cheaper MacBook Air series has also been upgraded to M5, albeit not the more premium ‘Pro’ and ‘Max’ variants.

MacBook Pro M5 Pro & M5 Max release date

Apple has revealed that the M5 Pro and M5 Max models of the MacBook Pro will have the same release schedule as each other. Both will be available to pre-order on March 4, then full availability arrives one week later on March 11. Much like the other hardware shown off throughout the week, pre-orders will be available on Apple’s official store at 6:15 AM PST.

The tech giant is running “special experiences” on March 4 in New York, London, and Shanghai to give a closer (presumably hands-on) look at all the new hardware launching this March. It’s an invite-only event for select members of the media, rather than the usual keynote-style presentation you may be used to.

MacBook Pro M5 Pro & M5 Max specs

The first thing worth mentioning is that the original MacBook Pro M5 is only available in the 14-inch form factor. The new Pro and Max chips can also be configured in the 14-inch size, but offer even more premium specs in the larger 16-inch variant. Aside from the display size, this does alter some specs, and Apple likes to keep its MacBooks nicely configurable. We’ve summarized some of the key details, but if you want to learn more, we recommend going to Apple’s comparison page.

MacBook Pro M5 Pro & M5 Max price compared to the standard M5

Due to the configurable nature of the MacBook Pro line-up – such as the different chips, display types, storage space, memory, and more extras- pricing can vary pretty widely. So if you’re hoping to figure out the exact cost with a configuration that suits your needs, head over to the Apple store. Below is a rundown on the cheapest you’ll be able to pick up one of the M5 MacBook Pros based on the form factor (size) and M5 chip installed in USD and GBP.

ModelM5M5 ProM5 Max
14-inchFrom $1,699 / £1,699From $2,199 / £2,199From $3,599 / £3,599
16-inch—From $2,699 / £2,699From $3,899 / £3,899

How much better is M5 Max versus M5 Pro?

It’s obvious that both of these chips will deliver exceptional performance for the MacBook Pro. The M5 Max represents the flagship version of the Apple M5 chip, the fifth generation of the company’s M-series silicon. Although both chips are available in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, it’s the 16-inch model that lets these chips flex their highest-level specs, so let’s focus on comparing those.

The M5 Max offers up to a 40-core GPU with 614/Gbs memory bandwidth, while the M5 Pro tops out at 20-cores and 307GB/s bandwidth. This should make the M5 Max model much more capable in complex, GPU-intensive workflows such as high-res (8K) video editing, 3D animation, and intensive gaming. Of course, the M5 Pro is still capable in these areas within its own right.

Interestingly, the M5 Pro offers slightly better battery life, offering up to 24 hours of video streaming compared to the M5 Max’s 22 hours. As with any of these tests, Apple is the one providing the numbers, so we’re keen to see how comparisons look once they’re in the hands of independent reviewers. Both models offer fast charging with the 140W USB-C power adapter provided; this drops to 96W on the 14-inch model, with a smaller 72.4-watt-hour battery (down from 100Whr).
