AMD fans are currently looking forward to the launch of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, which will be the first 9000X3D CPU to hit the market. Reviews are already coming in, with most confirming that it indeed delivers significantly better gaming performance than Intel’s latest Core Ultra 285K CPU, a claim AMD made just a few days ago. However, new benchmarks reveal that AMD has also succeeded in making the 9800X3D fast in productivity applications, and not just gaming.
9800X3D gaming and productivity performance
When it comes to gaming, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D takes the crown. In ComputerBase’s benchmarks, the 9800X3D scores an impressive 143 in gaming performance (measured in average FPS), while the 7800X3D trails behind with a score of 126. This means the 9800X3D offers roughly 12% better gaming performance than the 7800X3D.

However, the main surprise comes when looking at the application performance, where the 9800X3D isn't just slightly better but significantly outperforms the 7800X3D. The 9800X3D scores 159 in application performance, which is a notable improvement over the 7800X3D’s 127 score. This makes the 9800X3D around 22.3% faster in multi-core applications.
This higher application performance means that the 9800X3D is an excellent choice for users who need a CPU that can handle both gaming and productivity tasks, such as video editing, rendering, or other similar applications. Unlike previous gaming-focused CPUs, the 9800X3D should be able to deliver better results in productivity tasks, making it a more balanced option for both work and gaming.
However, it is important to note that while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D shines in performance, it does come at a cost of efficiency. In terms of FPS per watt, the 7800X3D scores 100, showing it gets more performance out of each watt used. In comparison, the 9800X3D scores 84 in efficiency, meaning it consumes more power to deliver better performance.
