AMD needs an RTX 5060 Ti competitor to dominate sales charts and win back market share

AMD has been playing second fiddle to Nvidia in the graphics card space for many years. The launch of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 series has helped change that balance. Some analysts believe that AMD needs to take the next step if it is to continue to compete against Team Green.
Blogger Tech Epiphany has become known for posts about sales figures, primarily sourced from German retailer MindFactory. Though these figures are only a small slice of the market, they still offer a glimpse into market trends that can be very valuable.
RX 9070 XT sales are still on top
Figures posted by TechEpiphany show that the RX 9070 XT continues to dominate, with this week's numbers so far showing 275 units sold of the RX 9070 XT, compared to only 120 of its closest competitors, the RTX 5060 Ti and RX 7800 XT. However, the introduction of the 9070 series has seen sales of AMD’s high-end 7900 XT and 7900 XTX cards drop off, which suggests the overall market share isn’t going to shake up, perhaps as much as Team Red would like.
Nvidia graphics cards with the -60 suffix have long been popular amongst PC gaming fans, since they offer a good balance of price versus performance, along with access to all the latest Nvidia features, such as DLSS. A quick glance at the Steam Hardware survey will show that -60 suffix cards are by far the most popular choice.
TechEpiphany noted that there is currently no direct competitor for the RTX 5060 Ti, leaving the lower end of the mid-tier uncontested. However, rumours persist that AMD plans to announce the RX 9060 XT at Computex, and we’re keen to see how this will shake up the market.
AMD has said that it does not intend to compete at the high-end of the GPU market, but that leaves the lower end of the market open to competition. The RTX 5060 Ti 8GB model attracted criticism for its comparative lack of VRAM, offering AMD a golden opportunity to offer what Nvidia cannot – copious amounts of VRAM. Current rumors say that Team Red is lining up both an 8GB and 16GB model, following in Nvidia’s footsteps.
Some more competition in the market will be of benefit to consumers, forcing price cuts and more active development.
