Leaked benchmarks suggest AMD’s latest integrated GPU, the Radeon 890M, boasts impressive performance over its rivals and even surpasses several popular entry-level discrete GPUs. This could spell trouble for budget-friendly gaming laptops that traditionally rely on these separate GPUs. On the flipside, a real boost for the handheld gaming PC landscape for the next generation of devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally and Legion Lenovo Go.
The Radeon 890M boasts the all-new ‘RDNA 3.5’ architecture, set to debut with the Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point” APUs which we saw some benchmarks for recently. These APUs combine a powerful CPU with integrated graphics, eliminating the need for a dedicated laptop graphics card. The 890M features 16 compute units and clocks up to a speedy 2900 MHz.
Benchmarks show gains over last-gen 780M
Independent benchmarks on Geekbench using the Vulkan and OpenCL graphics tests paint a promising picture for the 890M. The tests were conducted on the ASUS ProArt P16 laptop equipped with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU, showcasing impressive single-thread and multi-thread performance. The laptop also sported 32 GB of high-speed LPDDR5 memory, further enhancing its capabilities.

The 890M achieved a score of 46,298 points in the Vulkan test and 42,932 points in the OpenCL test. Here’s how it stacks up against current integrated and discrete GPUs:
Compared to its predecessor, the Radeon 780M (found in gaming PC handhelds like ROG Ally and Legion Go), the 890M delivers a whopping 46% performance boost in Vulkan and a solid 38% improvement in OpenCL tests. Even more impressive, the 890M outperforms several other popular discrete GPUs, including the Nvidia RTX 3050 4GB, AMD RX 6400, and Intel Arc A380. This translates to similar gaming performance without the additional power consumption or space requirement.
Landscape shift for laptop & handheld gaming
These benchmarks suggest a significant shift in the laptop graphics landscape. With the 890M offering comparable performance to entry-level discrete GPUs while using less power, budget-conscious gamers might find integrated graphics a more attractive option.
This is also just the beginning, with AMD planning to offer even more powerful APUs with the Strix Point lineup, featuring up to 40 compute units that could rival mainstream discrete GPUs. The only major competitor to AMD’s RDNA 3.5 architecture is expected to be Intel’s upcoming Arc “Xe2” series, launching alongside their Lunar Lake CPUs.
