AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT keeps its cool in FurMark stress test, here’s how it compares to the 5070 Ti and more

Table of Contents
The battle between AMD and Nvidia on the graphics card front is hotting up as the release of AMD's new Radeon cards draws ever closer. Despite the competition, the RX 9070 XT seems to keep its cool under pressure, as shown by the results of a recent FurMark stress test.
A user on the AnandTech forums posted the results of a FurMark stress test which clearly showed the Radeon RX 9070 XT, providing a glimpse into what we might expect from the March launch. However, there are a couple of caveats to explain – so let’s get to it.
RX 9070 XT benchmarked in FurMark, comes close to RTX 5070 Ti
FurMark is an application that aims to push a GPU to its limits. This test can provide valuable insights into the card’s stability and thermal performance, which is of particular interest to those who want to overclock the card. The FurMark test was conducted under OpenGL at 1080p resolution with MSAA turned off. The GPU was stress-tested for ten minutes. According to the leak, the sample used was a Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G.
Resolution | RX 9070 XT (Linux) | RTX 5070 Ti | RTX 4080 Super | RX 7900 XTX |
---|---|---|---|---|
1080p (FurMark) | 20,732 points (345 FPS) | 17,306 (287 FPS) | 20,229 (336 FPS) | 18,836 (313 FPS) |
The GPU delivered a score of 20,732 points (345 FPS). This is a respectable score. However, it is difficult to compare directly with other scores since this test used Linux drivers instead of the Windows drivers used for established tests on the FurMark database.
Previous tests of an RX 9070 sample (it is unknown if this sample was an XT or not) showed a score of 7,947 (132 FPS). This OpenGL test at 4K resolution under Windows drivers put it on the same level as the Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, which posted a score of 7,955 (132 FPS).
RX 9070 XT looks to have excellent thermals
It is where thermals are concerned that things get particularly interesting. The FurMark test is sometimes referred to as the ‘GPU burner'. This is due to the high temperatures the GPUs tend to reach whilst being pushed to their limits. Most GPUs struggle to keep the temperature below 80°C during the test.
The Radeon RX 9070 XT, however, stayed nice and cool at only 55°C, which is very good news to users interested in overclocking. A recent RX 9070 XT specs leak suggests that the Radeon card features a 304W TDP, which is just 4W more than the RTX 5070 Ti. Based on this, the low temps are an interesting detail, and we’ll have to see if AMD – or its partners – have implemented any specific next-gen cooling system.
