AMD’s graphics cards are improving faster than Nvidia’s with each generation, new benchmarks show
Table of Contents
Independent testing shows that AMD is better than Nvidia at improving its graphics cards with every new generation that comes along. New benchmarks measure the difference in generational uplift between the two rival GPU manufacturers. We’ve already seen AMD come out the clear winner in previous tests, and now another set of benchmarks helps back up the claims.
The results, which are based on testing done by TechSpot (AMD and Nvidia), compare the two companies’ growth in the past few years of graphics card releases. For Nvidia, the publication tested the RTX 5060 versus the 4060, 3060, and 2060. For AMD, they tested the comparable RX 9060 XT 8GB, 7600, 6600, and 5600 XT.
Nvidia vs AMD graphics card improvements, by generation
It’s no secret that the xx60 cards are the most popular of the series time and time again – just check any Steam Hardware Survey. You can expect the same for AMD, too. So, we’re looking at mainstream GPUs here – not just the flagship cards only a fraction of PC gamers can afford.
| Comparison | AMD | Nvidia | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RDNA 3 vs RDNA 4 / Ada Lovelace vs Blackwell | +46% | +24% | RX 7600 vs 9060 XT 8GB / RTX 4060 vs 5060 |
| RDNA 2 vs RDNA 3 / Ampere vs Ada Lovelace | +30% | +11% | RX 6600 vs 7600 / RTX 3060 vs 4060 |
| RDNA 1 vs RDNA 2 / Turing vs Ampere | +15% | +18% | RX 5600 XT vs 6600 / RTX 2060 vs 3060 |
| Total generational leap | +119% | +64% | |
| Average generational leap | +30% | +18% |

As you can see, AMD’s generational leaps are on average 12% better than Nvidia, with Team Red’s biggest winner being the most recent jump from RDNA 3 to RDNA 4. Speaking of RDNA 4, the architecture has already been improving since its launch drivers, proving AMD really does have a ‘fine wine’ effect with its GPUs. The newest architectures offer exclusivity to the brand’s latest upscaling technology – FSR 4 for AMD and DLSS 4 for Nvidia.
We recommend checking out TechSpot’s full benchmarks if you want to see the exact numbers, per card, per game. Titles benchmarked include Rainbow Six Siege X, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, and more, at 1080p and 1440p resolutions with varying graphics presets.
