It’s been quite a day. With Intel’s Core Ultra CPUs finally releasing, we’ve been hard at work testing and comparing these newly launched CPUs with their predecessors and competitors. Intel’s motto with the Core Ultra series is all about efficiency, and they have certainly stayed true to their words. Our Intel Core Ultra 9 285K review shows that the flagship CPU does a great job at handling thermals under heavy load. However, it lacks quite a bit in single-core productivity performance, with mediocre improvement in games.
Well, just when we thought this day couldn’t get crazier, we spotted some pretty good news about the upcoming Ryzen 7 9800X3D on Geekbench. The CPU is listed on Geekbench 6 as tested on the ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero and the Biostar X870 Valkyrie motherboards, and the numbers are looking pretty good.

The 9800X3D is ~20% better than 7800X3D on Geekbench 6
Based on the above screenshots from Geekbench, it looks like we’re getting an 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 9800X3D with a base and boost frequency of 4.7 GHz, and 5.3 GHz, respectively.
The processor scores 3,295 to 3305 points in single-core score and 18,221 to 18,560 points in multi-core score across the two motherboards. If we look at our Ryzen 7 7800X3D review, we can calculate that this is over 20% improvement in Geekbench scores, which is very good.
Surprisingly, our Core Ultra 9 285K scored 3,085 points in single-score and 23,550 points in Geekbench 6 multi-score tests. This actually puts the 9800X3D above Intel’s flagship in single-core performance.
Let’s not forget about gaming
The 9800X3D performing well in productivity benchmarks is a good surprise, but let’s not forget why we all love the X3D series – their gaming prowess. The Ryzen 7800X3D is one of the best gaming CPUs currently available, and unless AMD screws up royally with their 9800X3D, our expectations are quite high with the successor as well.
Today, VideoCardz came across a leaked marketing slide for the upcoming 9800X3D, which shows that the processor will outperform the legendary 7800X3D by around 8% in gaming performance. While there is no confirmed news about the 9800X3D’s gaming performance, if the 8% figure is to be accurate, the 9800X3D will definitely be on the list of the top gaming CPUs of the year.
