AMD’s upcoming RX 9070 just got some early benchmarks, here’s how it compares to the 5070 Ti and more
Table of Contents
We’re fast approaching the launch of AMD’s new Radeon GPUs, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. Both of these cards are expected to be revealed at the end of the month – Team Red has penciled in February 28th for the reveal of the next-gen RX 9000 series. However, there’s still much to learn about these GPUs as far as performance goes. The pricing is also hotly debated, with many people hoping to pay a maximum of $600 according to a recent poll.
Everyone is waiting for reviews to go live and they’re expected on the very same day Nvidia launches the RTX 5070. That means that benchmarks are not yet official. However, we’ve just spotted two RX 9070 benchmarks on Geekbench – so it’s time to check out what this new GPU could be capable of compared to the competition.

RX 9070 appears on Geekbench with Vulkan and OpenCL scores
Two new Geekbench listings have appeared on the site. Both of them are for the RX 9070 (non-XT), seemingly within the same rig paired with an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and 32GB DDR5-6000 RAM. The card has been tested in Vulkan and OpenCL synthetic graphics tests and the leak reveals that the RX 9070 ships with 16GB of VRAM.
Benchmark | RX 9070 | RTX 5070 Ti | RTX 4070 | RX 7900 XTX |
---|---|---|---|---|
Vulkan, Geekbench 6 | 158,520 | 228,576 | 156,516 | 235,279 |
OpenCL, Geekbench 6 | 140,842 | 229,140 | 167,944 | 189,046 |
The data above is pulled from the two new listings, as well as overall OpenCL Benchmarks and Vulkan Benchmarks for the remaining cards. Based on these tests, the RX 9070 most closely compares to Nvidia’s RTX 4070 (non-Super), while the newly-released RTX 5070 Ti pulls significantly ahead. It’s worth considering that these early benchmarks may not represent the full capabilities of the new Radeon card, but they at least give us something to work with until gaming benchmarks go live.
Again, we’re talking about the non-XT model here, which is a step below the RX 9070 XT. So far, leaked benchmarks place the XT close to the RTX 4080 or 4080 Super, even not far off the RTX 4090 in one Monster Hunter Wilds test. In all honesty, we expected the non-XT to be faster than these Vulkan and OpenCL scores would suggest, so we’ll continue to look forward to more benchmarks once we get closer to launch.
Based on what AMD has already said, the RX 7900 XTX could remain a flagship model, as Team Red has opted to focus more on the mid-range options instead of trying to battle Nvidia at the top end. Considering the majority of gamers stick to the cheaper cards (as shown time and time again in the Steam Hardware & Software Survey), this makes a lot of sense – and Nvidia’s ongoing stock issues open up the door for AMD to take advantage.
