Apple expert warns the new lightweight iPhone 17 Air could have a limited release in one region

We’re incredibly close to the iPhone 17 launch, with Apple likely to announce the new line-up at its latest event on September 9. One of the biggest reveals we can expect is for the iPhone 17 Air, which seems set to replace the older ‘Plus’ model. Much like the rest of the series, iPhone 17 Air pre orders are expected as soon as the 12th, at least based on previous years.
However, one thing that may hold back the exciting new Air model is eSIM implementation. While eSIMs (a digital SIM card built directly into the device) are commonplace in the U.S. (iPhone 14 and newer are eSIM-only in the region), devices outside of the U.S. still offer a physical SIM card slot. In the UK, for example, both an eSIM and a physical slot are present. This could be changing with the iPhone 17 series, particularly for the Air.
eSIM-only is likely to harm iPhone 17 Air sales in China
Based on previous leaks and rumors, the iPhone 17 series could mark Apple’s switch to an eSIM-only design in regions outside of the United States. While not confirmed, this is reportedly more likely for the thinner, lightweight iPhone 17 Air, as a space-saving measure. However, there may be some exceptions, such as China. It’s safe to say that China is not fully on board with eSIM implementation due to a lack of support from Chinese carriers.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that the region could see a “limited or staggered” release because of this issue.
China remains a massive market for Apple despite the plethora of options from Chinese brands. Statcounter reports Apple still holds a 22.37% share of the market as of August 2025. We can only speculate that the iPhone 17, Pro, and Pro Max models will retain their usual physical SIM card slot design in China due to the lack of carrier support.

However, the Air will be trickier to work around – the device is already rumored to feature a pretty disappointing 2,800mAh battery as a result of its ultra-thin form factor, though a more recent leak suggests it will break the 3,000 mark. The removal of the physical SIM card tray would provide more space for a bigger battery.
