Everything points towards AMD gearing up for a Ryzen 7 9850X3D release. The new and improved model has been rumored for a little while, and not too long ago, the CPU made an appearance in some now-deleted AMD driver notes. It seems likely that we could get this enhanced version of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D early next year, although it’s impossible to confirm this at the moment.
In any case, the 9850X3D now has a couple of leaked benchmarks on Geekbench, confirming the higher 5.6GHz boost clock speed; the existing 9800X3D chip has a boost clock of 5.2GHz, though it’s worth pointing out that the 9000X3D processors are the very first X3D models to be overclockable, so there’s always room to push it further.
9850X3D vs 9800X3D on Geekbench
The first thing to remember is that these are early 9850X3D benchmarks, so they likely don’t represent the final average benchmarks of the chip. We can see that the extra boost clock speed returns a higher single-core score, and while there is some disparity between the multi-score performance, the final result should be similar to the 9800X3D, as both chips feature an 8-core, 16-thread design. The benchmark also confirms the same amount of L3 Cache – 96MB.
| Benchmark | Ryzen 7 9850X3D | Ryzen 7 9800X3D |
|---|---|---|
| Single-core score | 3,439 | 3,334 |
| Multi-core score | 17,530 | 18,335 |

As the current best CPU for gaming, it’s safe to say that anyone with the 9800X3D doesn’t need the newer model. However, for those still on generations-old hardware, or perhaps those looking to upgrade to DDR5 on the AM5 platform (good luck with RAM prices), the 9850X3D will be a compelling option, and may eventually replace the original model.
