Ryzen 7 9800X3D is reportedly getting an upgrade, 9850X3D rumored with an even higher boost clock
Table of Contents
Rumor has it, AMD is gearing up to release an upgraded version of its massively popular Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. The X3D chip has topped many a CPU sales chart ever since it launched nearly 12 months ago. Following its success, a new rumor suggests AMD is close to launching a Ryzen 7 9850X3D with up to 5.6GHz boost clock.
This is an interesting development, certainly given the fact AMD usually only reserves xx50 model CPUs for its high-end Ryzen 9 products. For example, the current-gen flagship 9950X3D or its non-gaming-focused equivalent, the Ryzen 9 9950X. Ryzen processors have been a massive success for AMD, and the X3D series has been one of AMD’s best innovations. Targeted for gaming, Ryzen X3D processors use stacked ‘3D’ V-Cache to cram in as much L3 Cache as possible.
9850X3D rumored – how would it compare to the 9800X3D?
This rumor comes from hardware leaker chi11eddog on X, who previously claimed two new Granite Ridge CPUs on the way (likely X3D due to their high L3 Cache spec). The leaker has now expanded on the claims by naming a couple of SKUs, including the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.

There’s also a sequel to the current flagship Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the aptly named 9950X3D2, which implies a Dual 3D V-Cache design, the first of its kind. However, focusing on the 9850X3D, we can compare how the current model sizes up with the rumored specs.
| Specification | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | Ryzen 7 9850X3D (rumored) |
|---|---|---|
| Cores | 8 | 8 |
| Threads | 16 | 16 |
| Boost clock speed | 5.2GHz | 5.6GHz |
| Base clock speed | 4.7GHz | 4.7GHz |
| L3 Cache | 96MB | 96MB |
| TDP | 120W | 120W |
You’ll notice that the only specification change is a higher boost clock – 400MHz more frequency to work with. AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D is considered by many to be the best CPU for gaming. The Ryzen 9 equivalents are just as good, but the extra cash you’ll spend is for its improved productivity; the 9800X3D is still way better value solely for gaming.
Considering just how popular the 9800X3D has been ever since its launch last November, an upgraded version makes a lot of sense for enthusiasts. The 9800X3D became the first X3D processor that is overclockable, so the extra headroom on the rumored 9850X3D would be welcomed by overclockers.
