Grand Theft Auto 6 is months away from release and is having a major impact on the gaming industry. Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, and many publishers appear to be adjusting their plans to stay as far away from that date as possible.

A large number of upcoming games are now targeting September 2026 instead of November. At the PlayStation State of Play event, several major titles received September release dates, turning what was already a busy month into one of the most crowded release windows in recent memory.

Publishers are avoiding November like the plague

The reason is easy to understand. GTA 6 is expected to be the biggest game launch of the generation, and potentially one of the biggest releases in gaming history. Any title launching close to it risks being overshadowed by Rockstar’s marketing campaign and the massive amount of attention the game will receive once it arrives.

Many publishers are choosing September as a safer option. Releasing a game in September gives it roughly two months to generate sales, build a player base, and remain in the spotlight before GTA 6 takes over the conversation. A game launching in October or November, on the other hand, could quickly disappear from headlines once Rockstar’s highly anticipated title arrives.

The result is a packed September schedule filled with major releases across multiple genres. Several highly anticipated games are now set to launch throughout the month, while October is also becoming increasingly crowded. In contrast, November remains surprisingly empty for a month that would normally host some of the year’s biggest releases.

However, moving away from GTA 6 has created a different problem. Instead of competing against Rockstar’s blockbuster, many publishers are now competing against each other. Some major games are launching only days apart, forcing players to choose where to spend both their time and money.

With more announcements expected during the Summer Game Fest, which is just around the corner, September could become even busier in the coming days. While avoiding GTA 6 may seem like the safest strategy, the growing number of games targeting the same month means developers and publishers will be standing against each other in one of the most crowded release periods the industry has ever seen.
