iPhone Duo is in short supply, and Apple says it’s “not able to predict” when it can meet demand

Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is attracting plenty of buyers despite its $1,999 price tag. The device launched last month and quickly sold out, leaving many customers waiting to get their hands on one. Now, Apple CEO John Ternus has confirmed that the company is still struggling to keep up with demand, and it doesn’t know exactly when the situation will improve.
Apple recently announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2026, reporting record earnings that exceeded Wall Street’s expectations. However, the results did not include sales of the iPhone Duo, as the reporting period covered July through September, while the foldable device didn’t launch until October.
iPhone Duo availability so far
During an interview with Reuters, Ternus discussed how the new device is performing in terms of availability. He confirmed that iPhone Duo supply remains limited, although Apple is working to increase production and get more units into customers’ hands.

“Duo is constrained as of today,” Ternus said. He added that production is increasing as planned, but the company is “not able to predict when supply and demand will be in balance.”
So, customers hoping to purchase the iPhone Duo may have to wait a while longer. According to current Apple Store estimates, new orders aren’t expected to ship until late January 2027. These estimates have remained largely unchanged since October 16, when the first wave of pre-orders quickly sold out. A couple of weeks ago, Apple had reportedly upped its production target by 44%.
The situation is particularly interesting considering that the iPhone Duo is Apple’s most expensive smartphone ever. Despite its premium pricing, demand has apparently been strong enough to exceed the number of units Apple can currently produce and deliver. However, Apple hasn’t revealed how many units have been sold or how much production capacity it currently has, making it difficult to determine the exact scale of demand.
Aside from availability, Ternus also addressed reports of display problems affecting some iPhone Duo units. Shortly after launch, several owners reported issues with the foldable screen, including cracks and other display defects. Apple previously acknowledged the problem, and Ternus has now confirmed that a “very small percentage” of units have been returned because of display issues.
According to the CEO, Apple is replacing the affected devices with new units. However, the company hasn’t shared the exact number of returns or provided further details about what is causing the display problems.
