Apple confirms it will replace iPhone Duos with screen issues amid ‘crackgate’ controversy

The iPhone Duo has only been available for a few days, but Apple is already responding to complaints about problems with the foldable phone’s inner display. After several owners shared images of cracked screens, bright lines, and other display failures, Apple has now acknowledged the issue and confirmed that affected customers can receive a replacement.
Apple says the problem is affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units, specifically their inner displays. The company hasn’t revealed how many devices are involved or what exactly is causing the failures. However, it says customers who experience display problems should contact AppleCare to arrange a replacement.

iPhone Duo’s “crackgate” problem so far
Reports started appearing shortly after the iPhone Duo began shipping last week. Some owners posted images showing cracks running through the center of the foldable display, particularly around the hinge area. Others reported lines appearing across parts of the screen, dead pixels, and other display problems. Apple says affected devices tend to develop the problem relatively quickly.

One possible explanation has come from iFixit, which examined the design using teardown footage, patents, and CT scans. Its analysis found that some of the reported damage appears close to an area where a display cable passes beneath the screen near a central support bar. iFixit suggested that this could potentially create additional stress around the area when the phone is folded, although Apple hasn’t confirmed that this is responsible for the failures.
The timing isn’t ideal for Apple, as the Duo represents the company’s first attempt at a foldable iPhone. Demand has also been strong, with initial online stock reportedly selling out within minutes and customers lining up at stores following its release.
For affected iPhone Duo owners, the important part is that Apple has now confirmed replacements will be offered. The company hasn’t announced a broader recall or indicated that every Duo is affected, so for now, the issue appears limited to a relatively small number of units.
