Glimmer of hope that new AMD Ryzen chipset driver could help fix the 9800X3D burning issue
Table of Contents
AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D is one of the world’s best processors for gaming and is in high demand. However, that isn’t to say it hasn’t faced its fair share of issues. We’ve seen the 9800X3D fail to boot and, in some cases, even burn. However, as it turns out, that wasn’t the fault of the processor but the motherboard.
ASRock and AMD started a joint investigation to narrow down the issue and provide a solution for this issue. And now, AMD has released new chipset drivers, which cover a range of chipsets and processors, including a reference to X3D optimizations.
What is new in the chipset drivers 7.06.02.123?
The release notes for this chipset driver first highlight that bugs have been fixed and CETCOMPAT support has been added for the AMD PPM Provisioning File Driver. The AMD PPM (Processor Power Management) is a driver that helps manage and regulate the power settings for the processor, aiming to optimize power consumption without sacrificing performance.
This was most likely done to ensure that even if the motherboard voltage increases, the processor remains unharmed. As for the 9800X3D issues, bug fixes have been confirmed for the “AMD 3D V-Cache Performance Optimizer Driver”. The chipset driver supports the latest 9000 series, with the 9800X3D mentioned in the support list. Sadly, there is no specific reference to the investigation with ASRock, but fans hope the new driver will help address the issue further, following BIOS updates from ASRock.
Known Issues
- After installing the AMD Chipset Installer version “7.xx.xx.xx”, users cannot install version “6.xx.xx.xx” or earlier.
Workaround:- Uninstall the latest version of the AMD Chipset installer (version 7.xx.xx.xx or later).
- Delete the “Qt_Dependencies” folder located at “C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD\Chipset_Software\”.
- Install any older version of the AMD Chipset installer (version 6.xx.xx.xx or earlier).
- On a non-English OS, some driver names may appear in English.
- Occasionally, Ryzen PPKG may not install or upgrade.
If you are facing any of these issues, this is how you could fix them, but that shouldn’t be required if you update the drivers to version 7.06.02.123. If you’re wondering how to install Ryzen chipset drivers, there is a dedicated page by AMD that takes you through the process step-by-step.

This driver version was released for a wide range of chipsets on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems. However, more than that, numerous processors, including the 9800X3D, Threadripper PRO CPUs, Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors, and even 5000-series processors, were listed.
Overall, it appears that AMD has taken another step in the right direction and is on its way to bulletproofing its processors against current and future issues, ensuring the reign of Ryzen CPUs remains unimpeded.
