Making way for the RTX 50 series? Nvidia reportedly cuts 40 series production in half

Nvidia's upcoming lineup of next-gen GPUs, the RTX 50 series, is speculated to be released early next year – or Q4 2024 at the very earliest. Anyway, much has been rumored about the “Blackwell” graphics cards, but the exact specifications, features, and release date remain unconfirmed so far.
However, as per a new report, Nvidia has cut down on manufacturing of the RTX 40-series GPUs by almost half as the company is gearing up for RTX 50 GPUs. Earlier this week, we also reported that the RTX 4070 and higher cards are likely to face a shortage due to a GDDR6X batch quality issue. While the reasons for the shortage are different, they both point towards a similar outcome.
Nvidia has reportedly tightened the production of high-end RTX 4000 GPUs
According to harukaze5719's post on X, Nvidia has reportedly slowed down the production of RTX 40-series graphics cards. The well-known leaker got this information from IT Home, a Chinese tech website.
IT Home says that to prepare for the upcoming GPUs, Nvidia has shortened the supply to redirect the resources to the production of the RTX 50 GPUs. For this, the company has reduced the production of the RTX 40 series by almost 50%. However, the supply of high-end GPUs like RTX 4070 and above would be affected. The report did not mention anything specifically about other GPUs.
Side effects of the 40 series shortage
This move has resulted in a GPU supply shortage and an increase in prices. The same report mentioned that partner manufacturers, including ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock, are planning to increase graphics card prices.
Another thing to note here is that all recent reports point towards a shortage of high-end GPUs, which in this case are RTX 4070 and above. This makes it safe to assume that the supply of RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti may not be affected much.
In any case, the release of the Blackwell GPUs may not be too far off. To top it off, it was revealed at the SIGGRAPH 2024 summit in Denver that customers might get their hands on Blackwell architecture samples later this week.
