“Never part of the plan” AMD shuts down recent RX 9070 XT GPU price rumor

The upcoming launch of AMD’s new Radeon RX 9070 series graphics cards, specifically the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, is growing ever closer. AMD has confirmed these new GPUs won’t be ready to buy until March and has explained that it is taking “a little extra time” to ensure the software stack and FSR 4 support is up to scratch on launch.
Very little is official about these cards; we still don’t know the full list of specs or pricing for example. Most recently, a Bulgarian retailer revealed that the RX 9070 XT could cost as much as $899 before AMD chose to delay it. However, AMD has hit back, confirming that this high price tag was never part of the plan.
RX 9070 XT thankfully won’t cost $899, and it was never intended to
Frank Azor, Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions and Gaming Marketing at AMD, has commented on the recent price rumors. He notes that they “aren’t going to comment on all the price rumors,” but at least confirms that “an $899 USD starting price point was never part of the plan”.
It’s clear to us that a high $899 price tag wouldn’t be doing AMD any favors. For comparison, the RTX 5070 series, which is expected to directly compete with the two new Radeon RX 9070 cards, costs $549 and $749 for the 5070 and 5070 Ti respectively. Prior leaks point towards AMD’s rival cards costing within a similar region.
Disregarding the Bulgarian retailer leak now that AMD has shut it down, a RX 9070 series price rumor last week places the 9070 and 9070 XT at $499 and $599 respectively, placing them on either side of Nvidia’s RTX 5070. At the moment, this lines up similarly to what we’d estimate, though we’d like to see them even cheaper; some rumors even point towards the XT being $70 cheaper than the non-Ti 5070.
