In its latest site update, Nexus Mods is causing more commotion, with an article explaining what it plans to do about the adult content on the site and having to comply with the Law. This is due to both the UK and the EU introducing laws that will require it to remove illegal content and restrict access to adult content for those under the age of 18.

Nexus Mods highlights that, since it is a UK-based company, it has to comply with this law to continue operating. For the UK, that means following the Online Safety Act and the EU’s Digital Services Act. In both these areas, the site decided it wants to continue providing these mods, and so it will have to implement ID verification on the site to be able to offer adult content in these areas.

In the comments, the Founder, Darkone, was quick to clarify that this is not the fault of the new ownership that took over a couple of weeks ago. It is, in fact, just compliance with the law, and it is the unfortunate alternative to having to remove the content in restricted areas completely.

Who does this affect, and what are the coming changes?

This change may seem counterintuitive, but it remains community-focused, as the new management has promised. So this will primarily target UK and EU citizens at the moment, right now, you still get the same old ‘confirm you’re 18’ pop-up, but eventually, you will have to provide verified ID to access this area of the site. The rest of the world remains unchanged.

They are also updating the Terms of Service of the site to clarify the details of what is and isn’t allowed to be uploaded. One of the upgrades is the automated detection of Child Sexual Abuse Material (provided by the IWF), as the site aligns with the National Crime Agency’s requirements to notify them of users who provide this type of content.

It is also overhauling its categorization and tags. Rather than just having one generic adult content tag, it will now have the following:

• Pornographic
• Extreme Violence
• Harmful substances
• Suicide
• Self-harm
• Depression
• Body stigma
• Eating disorders
• Swearing or Profanity
• Sexualised 

This way, you can customize which ones you can see via your profile categories, and make the site friendlier to use in terms of what content you want to see (and content you want to avoid).
