The Nintendo Switch 2 release date is now less than a month away, and pre-orders have been available for a little while now. Recently, Nintendo opened up more pre-orders from its official store, without needing an invite in some regions.
On May 8th, the company released its financial results and forecasts. According to the report, the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to sell 15 million units in the 2026 Fiscal Year, close to what the original Switch sold in its first full year (15.05 million). However, considering the sequel doesn’t arrive until June 5th, that’s 12 months versus 9 months of availability.
Nintendo Switch 2 is forecast to sell 15 million units in 9 months
Nintendo’s Fiscal Year (FY) refreshes every March; it takes a couple of months for official financial reports to be published. As we can see from its forecast below, the Switch 2 is expected to sell 15 million units, with software sales expected to hit 45 million (excluding bundles). All of this is projected between June 2025 and March 2026. The original Switch sales are expected to be more than halved, but forecasts show that software will continue to provide a strong stream of revenue.

The original Switch’s 15.05 million sales included the entirety of the 2018 FY period, considering the device was released on March 3rd, 2017; there are also 2.74 million sales to account for between then and the end of March that year for FY17.
Despite the backlash against rising game prices, Nintendo seems very confident in the Switch 2. If you want to read more about Nintendo’s current state of finances, you can check out the full Financial Results report here.
