Nintendo provides existing Switch owners with an easy way to upgrade to Switch 2 and sell your old console

With the Nintendo Switch 2 release date fast approaching on June 5th, and Switch 2 pre-orders proving popular, Nintendo has outlined how existing console owners can make the upgrade with as little hassle as possible. Migrating from the original console to Switch 2 has been made easier by a system transfer tool in v20.0.0 of the System Update firmware.
We expect that many people making the upgrade will sell their old console (as long as their favorite titles remain compatible with Switch 2). With that in mind, Nintendo’s system transfer tool will let you transfer all data to the Switch 2, or upload it to a dedicated server if you are already parting ways with the Switch 1. It also reverts the original console to factory settings, making it much easier for you to sell the device as a fresh slate to its next owner.
System Transfer from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2
Version 20.0.0 of Nintendo Switch System Update was released on April 29th and can be found within your Switch’s System Settings. “In most situations,” this update should have been automatically downloaded. V20 comes with a range of changes, including the implementation of the Virtual Game Card feature, but let’s turn our focus to the new System Transfer option.

- System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 has been added under System Settings > System.
- You can perform a system transfer from your Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 using local communication.
- For users that will lose access to their Nintendo Switch before receiving their Nintendo Switch 2, there is an option to upload system transfer data to a dedicated server which can then be retrieved on their Nintendo Switch 2. After you upload your system transfer data to the dedicated server, the Nintendo Switch system will be initialized to factory settings, so only perform this transfer if you'll be able to complete the transfer on Nintendo Switch 2.
- If you want to continue using your Nintendo Switch until you have a Nintendo Switch 2, we recommend completing the system transfer using local communication after you have acquired a Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- An internet connection and Nintendo Account is required to complete both local and the server-based system transfer service.
- For more information, see System Transfer from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2.
So, you have two options. Transfer your existing Nintendo Switch data to a dedicated server to reclaim once your Switch 2 arrives, or simply wait until you can transfer data via local communication. Either way, this makes the transition from Switch 1 to Switch 2 extremely easy.
Once everything is set up, you can get straight to using the Switch 2’s new features, such as GameChat or up to 4K gaming in docked mode.
