The release of God of War Ragnarok on PC, the sequel to the popular God of War reboot from 2018, is taking place soon. In fact, the game will be rolled in just a few hours (it’s probably out by the time you read this). This comes nearly two years after it originally launched on PS5 and PS5. As per the PC system requirements, the game looks fairly demanding, much like other AAA games.
Just before the launch, Nvidia announced that DLSS support will be added to new games like God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, as well as a few others. Further, Nvidia has also given us a sneak peek into how God of War Ragnarok will run on PC with and without DLSS.
GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs deliver 2x FPS at 4K with DLSS 3 in God of War Ragnarok
As per the official announcement, Nvidia said that DLSS support for God of War Ragnarok will arrive on September 19th – on day one. Players who own an RTX 40 series GPU (desktop or laptop) will be able to play the game in 4K at max settings with help from DLSS 3.
According to the results shared by Nvidia, RTX 4090 can run GOW Ragnarok at 4K with max settings and deliver 99.8 FPS without DLSS and 199.4 FPS with DLSS 3. As you can see, using Nvidia’s upscaling and frame generation technology almost doubles the FPS. With that, the game seems incredibly optimized compared to other recent PC port launches such as FFXVI, which struggled at 4K, even with a 4090.
Here’s what the performance looks like in 4K. Nvidia notes that this is with “DLSS 3: Super Resolution Performance Mode & DLSS 3 Frame Generation”:
GPU | FPS without DLSS 3 | FPS with DLSS 3 & Frame Generation |
RTX 4090 | 99.8 | 199.4 |
RTX 4080 Super | 78.3 | 158.7 |
RTX 4070 Ti Super | 68.6 | 139.2 |
RTX 4070 Super | 57.3 | 118.8 |
RTX 4070 | 49.4 | 105.2 |
Based on these benchmarks, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards tend to deliver around twice the amount of FPS when DLSS 3 is enabled. In the same announcement, Nvidia also shared results for 1440p and 1080p gaming performance for God of War Ragnarok.
Here’s a quick glance at 1440p and 1080p desktop performance:
As you can see, with DLSS 3, there is almost 1.7x average improvement in the FPS output when it comes to 1440p at max settings. Further, for 1080p, all the GPUs – ranging from RTX 4060 to RTX 4090 deliver FPS between 120 and 300.
In addition to the DLSS support, Nvidia has also released a driver update to prepare for the GOW Ragnarok launch and other upcoming AAA games. Similarly, AMD has also released new drivers to get their Radeon GPUs ready for new games.
