Nvidia still hasn’t fixed photo mode crashing in Cyberpunk 2077, claims it has been “difficult to debug”
Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way since its rocky launch back in 2020. Over the years, CD Projekt Red has worked hard to turn it into one of the best ARPGs available today. Regular updates have added new story content, polished gameplay, and fixed bugs and glitches that were ruining the gameplay experience of many.
However, while the developers strive to keep the game fresh and bug-free, not all problems are within their control. Some issues come from outside the game, such as from the GPU drivers. One of the most frustrating problems currently arises from Nvidia’s side, with a bug that remains unfixed months after it was first reported.
Cyberpunk 2077 Photo Mode crash issue
One of the most beloved features in Cyberpunk 2077 is Photo Mode, which lets players capture cinematic screenshots of everything in the game. However, players have reported as early as February 2025 that using Photo Mode causes their game to crash, especially when Ray Tracing or Path Tracing is enabled.
This crash will happen without warning to unsuspecting players. If players haven’t saved recently, they can lose significant progress. This is especially annoying since Photo mode is even required for one of the game’s missions.
At first, fans believed this was a bug within Cyberpunk itself and waited for CD Projekt Red to patch it. But eventually, Nvidia confirmed the problem is linked to their graphics drivers, not the game. Normally, Nvidia is quick to respond when big titles like Cyberpunk 2077 face driver-related issues. The company often releases “Game Ready” drivers that launch alongside new updates. But in this case, the Photo Mode crash has been around for six months, and there’s still no real fix in sight.

Still no proper fix, but an Nvidia employee says “it has not been ignored”
This week, Nvidia released a new driver, version 580.88, which brought several performance improvements. One of the key fixes was for a micro-stutter issue in Cyberpunk 2077 when Vsync was enabled, something players had been complaining about for a while. Unfortunately, the Photo Mode crash is still not resolved. Nvidia even listed it under the “Open Issues” section of the update, which means they know about the problem but haven’t given any timeline for when it will be fixed.

It’s unclear why this issue has been so hard to fix, though Nvidia claims to be working on it. On the Nvidia forums, staff member Manuel confirms the team has been investigating the bug for a while, but has yet to determine the root cause. At least it’s nice to know it’s still on their radar.
