With the launch of the RTX 50 series on the horizon and news that most RTX 40 series GPUs are reportedly being discontinued, we’ve now come across a new leak that backs up the notion that the RTX 4070 range is also affected. The mid-range tier has proven to be a popular choice for many gamers in its lifetime, but it seems likely that these cards will be reaching end of production soon.

Providing a step up from 8GB VRAM, these GPUs are best suited for 1440p while offering decent performance for 4K too; the Super variant of the 4070 Ti in particular bumped up the memory to 16GB. In our RTX 4070 Ti Super review, we noted it was a “compelling choice” if you can find one for a good price.

RTX 4070, 4070 Super, and 4070 Ti Super may soon be discontinued

According to a forum post on Board Channels, as reported by the Japanese outlet Gazlog, the 4070 series will reach end-of-life in December. This could include all remaining SKUs, namely the RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Super, and RTX 4070 Ti Super; the original RTX 4070 Ti was discontinued back when the Super refresh took place, along with the 4080.

The leaked information details that all 4070 models will be discontinued by the end of December, with final shipments scheduled for some time in January 2025. This means we should see stock for these graphics cards rapidly decreasing as the RTX 50 series takes its place. According to current speculation, the RTX 5070 release date (along with the 5070 Ti) is expected in February 2025, one month after the top two flagship models launch at CES 2025.

Should you wait for the 50 series?

So, with the RTX 40 series looking on the brink of discontinuation, should you just wait for the 50 series? Nvidia has yet to reveal its next-generation graphics so there isn’t a whole lot known about performance uplift or new features. We’ve already seen some leaked specs for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, though the same for the 5070 series remains to be seen.

It’s already looking like Nvidia will come out on top for next-gen, with AMD not planning on a high-end card and the second-gen Intel Arc GPUs unlikely to cause a dent outside the more entry-level market. This seems to make way for the RTX 5070 – if the value for money is there. Speaking of price, if the 4070 series drops significantly as it goes on clearance, it could prove to be the perfect time to buy one – especially with Black Friday around the corner.
