RTX 5060 falls behind RTX 3070 in gaming benchmarks as reviews finally arrive

Traditionally, Nvidia graphics cards with the -60 suffix have been very popular amongst PC gaming fans. These cards usually end up dominating the Steam Hardware Survey results thanks to the combination of affordability, performance, and their tendency to be popular in prebuilt systems. However, according to recent benchmark figures, the latest -60 card might struggle to meet performance standards.
In general, you would expect that newer graphics cards could outperform older ones. This is thanks to advances in technology on both the hardware and software side. However, according to reviews, the RTX 5060 fails to beat a mid-range card from two generations ago. Despite launching on May 19th, many RTX 5060 reviews were delayed by the lack of pre-release driver support.
RTX 5060 falls behind the RTX 3070 in gaming benchmarks
Korean outlet QuasarZone posted benchmarking figures in its review, which paint an unflattering picture of the RTX 5060’s performance. QuasarZone tested fifteen games and took the average FPS and the 1% low FPS to get an overall picture at 1080p and 1440p.
At 1080p, the RTX 5060 scored 95.5%, but the nearly five-year-old RTX 3070 outperformed it, scoring 99.4% comparatively in average FPS benchmarks. At QHD/1440p resolution, the results were even worse. The RTX 5060 scored 96.8%, with the RTX 3070 pulling 103%. The outlet’s testing covers games including Doom: The Dark Ages, Overwatch 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth: Wukong, Diablo IV, and more.
Moving on to German outlet PC Games Hardware, which also managed to get its hands on a 5060. PCGH also saw similar results during its benchmarking tests. When testing pure rasterisation performance at 1080p, the RTX 3070 outperformed the RTX 5060 in several titles, including Alan Wake 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Enshrouded, and F1 24.
The RTX 5060 struggled even more at 1440p resolutions. For example, in F1 24, the RTX 3070 scored 81.3 FPS on average, while the RTX 5060 managed only 62.5 FPS. While sharing the same 8GB VRAM, the 5060 has a smaller memory bus (128-bit versus the 3070’s 256-bit) as well as fewer CUDA cores (3,840 versus 5,888).
It wasn't all bad; the RTX 5060 performed well in titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin's Creed: Mirage, and Final Fantasy XVI, managing to stay within shouting distance of its bigger brother, the RTX 5060 Ti, despite the 16GB VRAM advantage.
These results will not be encouraging for many customers, who were probably hoping for a card that could provide a bigger upgrade versus older hardware like the RTX 3070.
