Laptops have not been left out of the chaos surrounding Nvidia's RTX 50 series of graphics cards. Reviewers have seen considerable delays in receiving RTX 5070 Ti laptops, and final reviews are only just starting to trickle out.
Usually when a review embargo lifts, you will see reviews from a huge number of outlets start to appear online. That was not the case with RTX 5070 Ti laptops. Despite the review embargo lifting at the start of April, reviewers discovered that there were simply no units available for them to test.
One of the first to get its hands on the RTX 5070 Ti laptops is laptop specialist publication NotebookCheck. The test model was an engineering sample of the new XMG Pro 16 from Schenker, not even a completed model meant for the market, but instead an engineering sample meant for testing and evaluation.
Benchmarking results
The first tests were conducted using synthetic benchmarks such as 3D Mark. These tests showed that the RTX 5070 Ti lagged behind the RTX 4080, posting a score of 55,691 points, while the RTX 4080 got a score of 56,772 points.
Results were better in gaming benchmarks. With the RTX 5070 Ti outperforming several RTX 4080 laptops in games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Grand Theft Auto V. The laptop did run into a problem when playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, however. VRAM constraints affected performance at 1440p, so making use of DLSS, path tracing, and frame generation is too demanding for the system.
The overall verdict was that the RTX 5070 Ti laptop was roughly on par with old GeForce RTX 4080 devices, but with improved efficiency. The main drawback was the lack of VRAM and the delay in getting machines onto store shelves.
This is not the first time reviews of RTX 50 series laptops have been delayed. Reviews for RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 laptops were delayed due to driver issues causing repeated blue screen crashes.
