The RTX 5090 is finally here, but its launch has left many PC enthusiasts wanting. The card sold out within minutes at major retailers, making it nearly impossible to buy. Some are even calling it a “paper launch” because the stock was so limited. In fact, a UK retailer suggests that the RTX 5090 could be months away from restocking.

But in some good news, recent benchmark results show that the RTX 5090 is a huge improvement over the RTX 4090, especially in high-resolution Virtual Reality (VR) gaming. The performance difference between the two GPUs is massive, making the RTX 5090 a dream card for VR gamers.

RTX 5090 offers huge improvements in VR gaming over the RTX 4090

These tests were conducted by Omniwhatever on YouTube. The test configuration includes the RTX 5090/4090, Ryzen 7950X3D, 64GB of DDR5 RAM, and the Meta Quest 3. Here’s a closer look at the most impacted benchmarks:

  • Red Matter 2 Red Matter 2 (400% Resolution Scale)
    • RTX 5090: 116.69 FPS
    • RTX 4090: 46.47 FPS
    • Performance Increase: 151% faster
  • Metro Awakening (300% Resolution Scale)
    • RTX 5090: 80.94 FPS
    • RTX 4090: 24.11 FPS
    • Performance Increase: 236% faster
  • Skyrim VR (300% Resolution Scale)
    • RTX 5090: 48.05 FPS
    • RTX 4090: 32.67 FPS
    • Performance Increase: 47% faster
  • Outer Wilds VR (400% Resolution Scale)
    • RTX 5090: 73.36 FPS
    • RTX 4090: 44.73 FPS
    • Performance Increase: 64% faster

These results clearly show that the RTX 5090 is miles ahead of the RTX 4090 in VR gaming at higher resolutions. The biggest improvement can be seen in Metro Awakening, where the 5090 runs the game 236% faster than the 4090 at 300% resolution scale. Even in other games like Red Matter 2 and Outer Wilds VR, the FPS jump is huge. At lower resolution scales (such as 100%), the difference between the two cards is much less drastic.

This performance boost is great news for VR enthusiasts who want better visuals and smoother gameplay. However, getting an RTX 5090 is a challenge right now due to its limited availability. Be sure to keep an eye on our RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 stock tracker while you’re here. If you are lucky enough to grab one, the VR experience will be unmatched.
