Steam Machine owners have already come up with plenty of creative ideas for custom faceplates, but one modder has taken things to a much more luxurious level. A creator has made three custom marble faceplates for the Steam Machine, including one made from Statuario marble sourced from Carrara, Italy, the same quarry basin associated with Michelangelo’s work.

The creator recently shared details about the project, revealing that they made two additional versions after an earlier faceplate. The new options include the Statuario marble, a Sahara Noir version with a black surface and a gold vein running through it, and a Roman travertine model from the original project.

This isn’t a commercial product made by a large company. The creator explained that they work with marble for superyacht interiors in Carrara leftover marble pieces (offcuts) from their workshop to make the faceplates. Each one is cut and finished by hand, meaning the process isn’t really something that can be mass-produced.

It’s certainly a unique look, and a far cry from the display-focused faceplates the likes of JSAUX have been producing lately.

The stone itself is only around 5 to 6mm thick. Rather than making the entire faceplate from solid marble, the creator bonded the stone to a 3D-printed structure that contains the magnets needed to attach it to the Steam Machine. This approach helps keep the weight under control while also reducing the chance of the marble cracking. The creator said the technique is similar to how thin stone is used in yacht interiors, where a lightweight core is combined with a real stone surface.

When asked if the Steam Machine has a specific faceplate weight limit, the creator said they worked backward from what the stone could reasonably support. The finished plates weigh 320 grams for the travertine and 340 grams for both the Sahara Noir and Statuario versions.

The creator claims their marble faceplate has remained attached to the Steam Machine without any issues. They also pointed out that the magnets hold the plate through shear force rather than a direct pulling force, which means weight can have a bigger effect than expected.
