A modder by the name of Arnov Sharma has created a new gaming experience by transforming a Raspberry Pi Zero W into a Pokémon-themed console – and yes, it is capable of playing the classic Pokémon games from when you were a kid. The project, dubbed “PokePi,” offers (another) portable and affordable way to relive the beloved franchise.
The PokePi is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero W and runs Retropie, a popular program for emulating retro games. The ‘console’ is equipped with a custom-designed USB breakout board, allowing users to connect multiple game controllers.

Main features of the PokePi
One of the standout features of the PokePi is its 3D-printed enclosure, which is designed to resemble a Pokéball. The enclosure not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also provides a protective case for the internal components. The console can emulate a wide range of classic Pokémon games, particularly those from the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color eras.
However, due to the limited processing power and memory of the Raspberry Pi Zero W, some games may not run optimally. Nevertheless, popular classics like “Pokémon Red,” “Pokémon Blue,” and “Pokémon Yellow” are expected to perform well.
It’s a DIY project
The creator of the PokePi, Arnov Sharma, shared detailed instructions and design files on the website Hackster, encouraging others to make their own DIY gaming projects. He emphasized the affordability and versatility of the Raspberry Pi, making it an ideal platform for retro gaming enthusiasts.
The Raspberry Pi has long been a versatile and fun product due to its affordability, compact size, and open-source nature. Its low cost makes it accessible to a wide range of users, from hobbyists to developers. Its small form factor allows it to be easily integrated into various projects, especially small gaming consoles like this one.
The open-source community behind the Raspberry Pi provides a wealth of resources, tutorials, and support on a range of forums, making it easy for users to learn and experiment with the device.
