It has been a while since the Meta Quest 3 was released, and it looks like Meta is gearing up to expand its range of VR offerings. For the past few months, there has been speculation of an affordable Meta Quest being in the works.

Alongside the online speculations, it looks like Meta itself has leaked the possible upcoming VR headset. As per the recent FCC (United States Government’s Federal Communications Commission) and Dekra certifications, the company has indeed been working on a new Meta Quest. With Meta Connect 2024 set for September 25-26, this could be one of the new arrivals.

We might get a glimpse of the new Quest headset at Meta Connect

According to a report by 91Mobiles, Meta has filed for certifications for a device named ‘P97’ and it says that it’s a VR headset. The FCC filing also doubles down on this, so it will likely be a new Meta Quest 3.

Further, earlier rumors suggest that this new Meta Quest headset might be named ‘Meta Quest 3S’ and the price might be similar to Meta Quest 2. In fact, Mark Gurman, who’s a well-known analyst in the industry, suggested that the new Quest headset might be priced around “$300 or $400.”

A cheap alternative?

While Meta Quest 3 turned out to be a fantastic VR headset for its price, it does cost twice as much as its predecessor Quest 2. To put it into perspective, the cheapest Quest 2 cost $299, and the newer Quest 3, which was launched in 2023 was priced starting from $499.99, in part thanks to starting at 128GB rather than the previous-gen’s 64GB. If the rumors of this new VR headset being cheaper are true, then VR enthusiasts will have more options to choose from.

It should be noted that Meta has not officially confirmed anything about an upcoming Quest headset or any other VR headset. But with all this speculation, plus the certifications, it is a possibility that the company might share some news at the upcoming Meta Connect event. In any case, we won’t know anything for sure until Meta shares some news, officially, likely on the big stage.
