The launch of Nvidia's new GeForce 50 series Blackwell cards has not gone entirely smoothly. Despite the incredible performance figures these new GPUs are capable of turning out, some users have been forced to ask for replacement cards – and they could be waiting a long time.

When the RTX 50 series first launched, the vast majority of cards were snapped up within minutes. Due to massive demand, many retailers quickly sold out of their available stock of RTX 5090, 5080, and 5070 Ti cards. This resulted in resellers who did manage to grab stock posting massively inflated prices for these much-desired GPUs, to the frustration of many consumers.

Even those who did manage to snap up one of these high-end cards were not entirely out of the woods. Some very unlucky users found that their cards were afflicted by an extremely unusual manufacturing fault that caused their cards to underperform. This was due to a strange fault that caused some RTX 5090, 5080, and 5070 Ti cards to have fewer render cores or ROPs than they should.

Nvidia issue sees 50 Series cards ship with incorrect number of ROPs

Users affected by this particular issue can contact their card manufacturer to request a replacement. Unfortunately, as the market demand has not yet died down, users could be in for a long wait before a fully working card arrives on their doorstep.

According to reports, Nvidia was anticipating extremely high demand for the RTX 50 series cards and is working with its board partners on the problem. According to an Nvidia insider, the company is committed to a plan of regular shipments of stock to try and mitigate these issues as much as possible.

Several card manufacturers are confirmed to have been hit by the ‘missing ROPs' issue, including MSI. Gigabyte, Zotac, and Manli. It is currently unknown how long replacements are expected to take.
