Steam Deck LCD owners looking to repair or expand the lifespan of their device can breathe a sigh of relief. Just yesterday, reports suggested that Valve was beginning to “sunset” replacement batteries for the original Steam Deck, raising concerns among users who may need to replace aging batteries in the future.

The issue affected only the LCD model, not the Steam Deck OLED. Even so, it caused plenty of concern, as a large number of handheld gamers still use the original version. Fortunately, it now looks like there is no reason to worry. Valve has now reached out to iFixit to confirm it is sending a new batch of LCD model batteries.

Valve steps in to resolve the lack of stock

The concerns began after an iFixit customer shared a response from the company’s support team. In the email, iFixit said it was unlikely to receive additional OEM Steam Deck LCD batteries from Valve and was actively evaluating aftermarket alternatives. An iFixit representative later clarified that the situation was due to Valve no longer supplying additional batteries. As a result, iFixit was finding it difficult to continue offering official replacement parts for the original Steam Deck.

However, the situation has quickly turned around. In a post on X, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens confirmed that Valve has reached out to the company and is sending a new batch of Steam Deck LCD batteries. He also said that iFixit will “move heaven and earth” to continue supporting Steam Deck owners, signaling the company’s commitment to keeping repair options available.

The CEO also responded to the “sunsetting” story with a simple “Nope” – so it looks like these parts will stay in production.

This is great news for anyone still using the original Steam Deck LCD. Valve discontinued the LCD model a while ago and has since shifted its focus to the OLED model, but there are still plenty of LCD owners out there (us included). And as batteries naturally lose capacity over time, access to official replacement parts is important for extending the life of the handheld.

At the time of writing, the official Steam Deck LCD Battery remains out of stock on iFixit’s US store, but that should soon change. The Steam Deck OLED Battery is widely available. If you’re wondering why these are two different products, the OLED model features a larger 50WHr battery, while the LCD model ships with a 40WHr one.
