The AI community is once again buzzing with speculation about a potential release of 4.5 by OpenAI. Rumors were sparked yesterday when several signs of a possible release emerged from different sources. Though nothing’s yet confirmed, here we take a look at the GPT-4.5 release date rumors.

GPT-4.5 release date rumors

Jimmy Apple’s X account tweet

To start, the anonymous Jimmy Apple’s X account tweeted a screenshot from the ZOTGPT service page, listing GPT-4.5 as an active model. ZOTGPT is a UCI campus term that describes a range of AI services secured with campus contracts. Jimmy Apples, known for providing accurate early information about OpenAI, said this was probably an “accidental typo.” This seems likely given the nature and scope of the campus service, and it would be unusual for OpenAI to provide external access to its latest model before an official announcement.

Reddit post on r/ChatGPT

On the same day, a Reddit post in the r/ChatGPT subreddit appeared, showing details drawn from what it said was a cached search in Bing using the DuckDuckGo engine. The search returned the OpenAI blog address at openai.com/blog/gpt4.5-turbo. The meta showed that GPT-4.5 Turbo would surpass the current model with a much larger 256k context window and improved speed and accuracy. Attempts to access the blog post now return a 404 error. Meanwhile, a further post on X surfaced the source code of the webpage, providing additional context to the post:

OpenAI’s response to Growing Competition

Apart from its recent Sora previews, OpenAI has been relatively quiet in recent months. With growing competition from rivals like Anthropic’s Claude 3 and Google’s Gemini, OpenAI may need to respond to maintain its position as the market leader. Releasing a ChatGPT with GPT-4.5 could be the perfect way to do just that.

If it follows last year’s pattern, the company will hold its developer conference in November after the US elections. If a GPT 5.0 is not slated for release this year, OpenAI could mitigate the disappointment with updates to Dalle, the GPT store, further details on Sora, and a big splash around the release of ChatGPT 4.5. This would be an effective way to respond to its rivals’ competitive moves.

The AI arms race continues

The AI arms race continues to heat up. After the excitement generated by Google’s Gemini and Anthropics Claude 3.0, all eyes are now on OpenAI. Expect speculation and breathless rumors to continue as excitement and anticipation grow. The release of ChatGPT 4.5 would mark another significant milestone in the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence. Either way, it seems that OpenAI intends to remain at the forefront of this groundbreaking technology.

Is GPT-4.5 available?

No, GPT-4.5 is not available as there is no official GPT-4.5 as yet. Although the rumor mill continues to turn, OpenAI has said nothing about a prospective new model. So for now all we have is rumors and speculation.
