AI Dungeon brings the classic text adventure format to the 21st century. You can play your own unique adventure game, generated for you in real-time by AI. Explore endless scenarios, with user-generated settings like Fiomar and Faerûn, or create your own. Is AI Dungeon free? Let’s explore this top AI-powered roleplay game.

Is AI Dungeon free?

Yes, AI Dungeon is free. You can play online for free via a web browser, or by downloading the app for iOS, Android, or Steam.

There is also a premium version, which enables the most cutting-edge AI models without ads, plus image generation capabilities. The free version of AI Dungeon is still extremely capable. Either version can be accessed from a PC or Mac device via any popular web browser.

Everyone can play using the game’s two newest models, Mixtral and MythoMax. The new default AI models replace GPT-4 as the storyteller behind the stories. This makes it quite comparable to ChatGPT, which is capable of the same thing for free, using the GPT-3.5 model.

What is AI Dungeon?

AI Dungeon is a “text-based, AI-generated fantasy simulation with infinite possibilities”. That’s because, unlike the 90s, the story can now talk back.

Thanks to recent advances in artificial intelligence, computers can understand what we’re saying, and talk back to us in a very tailored way. This technology is called natural language processing (NLP), and it’s everywhere. AI Chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Microsoft respond to your questions – known as text prompts – and can provide bespoke answers that you wont find on Google. They can even generate pictures if your question calls for it!

So what does this have to do with AI Dungeon? The game markets itself as a “text-based adventure-story game you direct (and star in) while the AI brings it to life”. You direct the game, creating unique scenarios as the main character. AI models will play the part of a second person, not unlike the Dungeon Master in a game of D&D. The AI-driven stories feed off of user-generated scenarios to create new and unique experiences in real-time. No two stories will be the same.

This is where AI Dungeon differs from its predecessors. Whereas the original format, extremely limited by data limitations of the time, used pre-written stories with a pre-determined branching narrative, today’s version has infinite adventure waiting for you.
