Meta platforms have seen a wave a generative AI updates since Meta Connect 2023 on September 27th. Between announcements of the Meta Quest 3, a second new tech wearable in Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Meta AI studio creating custom AI chatbots, and then Meta Avatars, we weren’t expecting any more. AI-generated stickers hit Meta platforms today, and here’s how you can make the Facebook messenger AI stickers.
How do I access Meta AI?
Meta AI is a broad term, and refers to more than one AI tool. The social media tech giant released a broad swathe of generative AI tools last month, and with the rollout still in progress, here’s what we know so far.
“We’re excited to announce new generative AI experiences across our apps and devices to help people have fun, connect and learn something new,” states the new Meta AI landing page.
In February of this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised a dedicated team to be “focused” on generative AI. Lead by Meta’s Vice President of AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, the use of AI promises new outlets for “self-expression” in social media apps. One of these new generative AI features are Meta’s AI stickers, coming to “WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook Stories”.
In a September 27th press release, coinciding with the Meta Connect event, the tech firm explains the feature.
“Billions of stickers are sent across our platforms every month, adding another fun and creative way for people to communicate and express themselves. Today, we announced new AI stickers that enable you to effortlessly generate customized stickers for your chats and stories. Using technology from Llama 2 and our foundational model for image generation called Emu, our AI tool turns your text prompts into multiple unique, high-quality stickers in seconds. This new feature, which is rolling out to select English-language users over the next month in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook Stories, provides infinitely more options to convey how you’re feeling at any moment. AI stickers will roll out to select English language users over the next month.”

How to make Facebook messenger AI stickers
The new feature is included for free in the Messenger app for iOS and Android. To access Meta’s AI stickers:
Step
Update Messenger
Update your Messenger app, if you haven’t done so already. Do this by opening your phones app store (Apple App Store on iOS or Google Play Store on Android), then search for “Messenger” and hit “Update”.
Step
Stickers
In the Messenger app, locate the stickers button (This looks like a square with rounded corners, featuring a smiley face partly obscured by the ‘peeling’ of the ‘sticker’).
Step
AI Stickers
If the feature has rolled out to you personally, you’ll see an “AI Stickers” option. Tap that, and type in a text prompt.
Step
Generate your own!
Hit enter, and your text prompts will be fed into Meta’s image generation model called Emu, generating high-quality stickers unique to your prompt!
We’re starting to roll out AI stickers across our apps, and soon you’ll be able to edit your images or even co-create them with friends on Instagram using our new AI editing tools, restyle and backdrop.
