The new shades capture audio and video through built-in microphones and a camera inside the frame. Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are in their second-generation, and can even be bought with prescription lenses. Will the temptation of livestreaming your life directly to Instagram and Facebook cause privacy concerns, or is it a clever safety feature for those walking home at night?

What do the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses do?

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg debuted multiple new pieces of tech at the Meta connect event alongside the new Meta AI chatbots, Meta AI studio, and AI stickers. Not least of these were the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses – sunglasses with directional audio and transitional lenses for hands-free livestreaming, listening to music, and taking high-quality photos, complete with voice commands.

Set to launch with a new style dubbed Headliner, in addition to the classic Wayfarer and large Wayfarer, runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 processor. This powers “on-glass AI” which can identify text, then which specific language, and translate the real world in real-time to the wearer. All 3 styles weigh roughly 50 grams.

The previous generation, announced in August 2020, debuted in September 2021 as a collaboration with Ray-Ban parent company EssilorLuxottica. However, “The new Ray-Ban Meta collection is in a league of its own with features that have never fit inside a pair of glasses before,” says Chief Wearables Officer, Rocco Basilico.
