OpenAI has recently launched its highly anticipated new multimodal model – GPT-4. But, will it be free?

At the moment, you can’t access GPT-4 for free, unfortunately. The only way to access the new model seems to be through Chat GPT – if you have a Chat GPT Plus subscription.

The exclusive subscription plan costs $20 a month and gives you guaranteed access to the chatbot, as well as faster response times, and special priority access to the latest features.

OpenAI has plans to possibly introduce a “new subscription level for higher-volume GPT-4 usage” which is expected to be the next tier up from their current Chat GPT Plus plan.

For all you free Chat GPT users out there, don’t fret! OpenAI has confirmed that they hope to offer a free variation of GPT-4 for everyone to try.

On the other hand, if you’re a developer, adding GPT-4 infrastructure into your application does come at a cost. OpenAI has released its new pricing plans to include this recent release. Continue reading to find out the nitty-gritty details about OpenAI’s new pricing model.

How much does GPT-4 cost?

OpenAI has released its updated pricing plans for the new GPT-4 model. Prices are set for every 1,000 tokens. Or in other words, for every 750 words generated by the model.

ModelPromptCompletion
8K context$0.03 per 1,000 tokens$0.06 per 1,000 tokens
32K context$0.06 per 1,000 tokens$0.12 per 1,000 tokens

In comparison, using GPT-3.5 turbo costs around $0.002 per 1,000 tokens.

GPT-4, although rumored to be a similar size GPT-3, is expected to be far more powerful and accurate than its predecessor. The new model is also capable of understanding and responding to images – a never-seen-before feature of an OpenAI GPT model.

For example, GPT-4 can generate recipe suggestions by examining images of ingredients. This is a pretty neat capability and it explains the massive price jump between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.

Regardless of the cost, OpenAI does offer a free trial service allowing you to access any of their models before signing up for a payment plan.

They currently offer a $5 free credit which is valid for three months. This could be an attractive option for those looking to get a hands-on experience with GPT-4 once it is released this week.

Alternatively, users who have subscribed to Chat GPT Plus will be granted access to GPT-4 via Chat GPT, albeit with a usage limit.

Final Thoughts

Will GPT-4 be free? Well, quite possibly in the future. OpenAI as a company has always advocated for publically accessible AI. So, we hope that the tech company will keep to its promise and make some shape or form of GPT-4 free to the public in the near future.
