We know that trawling through SSD prices has been a chore this year. But we’re doing it on your behalf, and we’ve some fairly surprising news. Lexar’s handy NM790 2TB SSD drive is at its lowest price since April. Now, it’s not last-year-level pricing, but after spiking to $449 back in May, the 2TB drive has consistently tumbled lower. Right now, it’s available for $299. And, given some 2TB NVMe models still reach towards the $400 mark, it’s a solid improvement for a very solid all-round option.

Why we’d pick the Lexar 2TB NM790 SSD

Strong consumer pick

The 2TB NM790 isn’t, say, the Samsung 2TB 990 Pro. It’s a DRAM-less drive, and it’s not designed for professional-standard performance. But it is a good pick for consumer PCs for expanded storage, and is plenty fast enough for most needs with its 7400MB/s (read) and 6500MB/s (write) speeds.

Good for console and laptop

This NVMe SSD drive isn’t just for PCs, although it can excel in consumer systems. It would also suit the role of quick storage in a console. Additionally, the NM790 spec is power-efficient, and because it’s a single-sided NVMe, it will suit laptop storage while keeping cooler in a more confined space.

Pricing

Given the current state of the SSD market, the NM790’s price stands out. Engineered as a consumer-friendly, value-focused drive, it sticks to that brief even in a time of memory chip misery. The only well-established name we can find with a cheaper model is Kingston with its NV3 2TB NVMe. It is more affordable, but it also doesn’t match the NM790’s performance.

What to consider before you buy

If you’ve made it this far, you are likely actively looking for an NVMe SSD drive for a computer or console. Pricing is the key, and we think the Lexar 2TB NM790 shows good (in the current market) value for its performance. It’s not a professional-grade SSD, not one of the best NVMe SSDs, but it’s not an entry-level option either. You can spend $80-$100 more and get better performance, but will you really get the most out of that expenditure? If the answer is no, then the best price in four months could be the right price to pick this Lexar drive up at.
