Even though AMD might be right in saying there’s a market for 8GB GPUs, that doesn’t mean it has to be a popular choice. The latest sales figures just prove that PC builders aren’t having it and voting with their wallets instead. As a report from Mindfactory provided by 3DCenter shows, the numbers for the lower-tier graphics cards that these memory specs cover.

The sales report covers the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and 8GB, RTX 5060, and the RX 9060 XT 16 GB and 8GB models. Even though three of the five models offer just 8GB of memory compared to 16GB, there is quite a stark difference in the number of sales they produce.

As per the report, the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB sold around 105 units on launch, with total sales rising to 1,560 units, averaging 22.7 units per day. While the rival AMD RX 9060 XT 16GB sold around 150 on launch and has since sold around 640, leading to a 35 per day average, which is more impressive and should outsell the Nvidia counterpart once it reaches the same lifespan.

For the 8GB models, the RTX 5060 is the best-performing option, with around 15-20 sales on launch and 280 since, averaging 8.5 per day. Out of the two, the AMD card is performing better, reaching an average of 2.7 daily compared to 2.1 for the 5060 Ti. These sales are sourced from German retailer Mindfactory, so keep in mind that they don’t equate to global sales, but it’s a good indicator of what PC gamers are prioritizing.

The problem with 8GB cards

Yes, 8GB cards do offer a budget-friendly GPU option, and that’s all some people might be able to afford, but you can quickly encounter performance issues with them. As we’ve covered previously, we’ve seen The Last of Us 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle initially experience issues, seemingly running out of memory and performance tanking due to these problems.

Just by looking at various reviewers running these hard-hitting games, you can see the drop-offs from 8GB model cards that are slowly becoming obsolete in the modern lineup. Unable to keep up with the requirements of current AAA games, which often come with stunning visuals but are rather hard-hitting and potentially unoptimized, this cuts out a large segment of users.

With both these sales numbers and requirements in mind, hopefully, GPU manufacturers will listen and provide more budget-friendly high memory cards. Much like Intel already has the market with both the Arc B570 and B580 providing a strong value option, it’d be nice for the two main players, particularly Nvidia, to do the same.
