AMD could be releasing a third RX 9070 series graphics card, ahead of 9060 XT launch

AMD’s current generation of graphics cards is the RX 9000 series (you may have noticed the company skipped 8000 for its desktop GPUs). So far, we have the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, the latter of which enjoyed a ton of success, becoming AMD’s best-selling Radeon GPU at launch. Following the success, we expect to see more from Team Red.
The company has already confirmed there will be “RX 9060 products” in the second quarter of this year, but a new development suggests a third card is coming before we get there. There’s a catch, though, as current leaks suggest that AMD is developing another GRE graphics card, which has historically launched exclusively in China before coming to other regions at a later date.

AMD is reportedly working on an RX 9070 GRE
Originally coined ‘Golden Rabbit Edition’ for the Chinese zodiac in 2023, AMD later confirmed that GRE now stands for ‘Great Radeon Edition’ in an apparent rebranding. In any case, these cards have generally been sold first in China, before getting a limited release in other regions. For example, last-gen’s RX 7900 GRE launched in China in July 2023, before coming to the US market the following February.
This information comes from Chinese outlet ITHome. It reports that a PC hardware dealer, Zhongzheng Computer, posted to an official WeChat account claiming that “Friends who don’t have enough budget for 9070XT can wait for 9070GRE, which will have a better price-performance ratio. 9060XT will have to wait for a while.” [translated] ITHome also claims its sources can confirm the existence of the card, though there is still very little to go off right now in terms of specs or performance.
They go on to say that the RX 9070 GRE is expected to launch in China first, despite the branding change. Like we say, there isn’t much to learn as far as performance goes, but we can expect it to perform worse than the 9070 XT. For comparison, the RX 7900 GRE was around 14% slower than the 7900 XT at 1440p, according to benchmarks from TechPowerUp.
