It feels like it’s been quite a while since the 9800X3D released, but it has just been less than half a year since the best gaming CPU came to the market. Even with stock issues plaguing its launch, it clearly hasn’t stopped it from soaring to the heights of everyone’s builds. As in the latest CPU-Z hardware statistics, the 9800X3D jumps to the top of the year-on-year chart.

That’s unlikely to be a surprise to anyone, as even in our review of the 9800X3D CPU, it achieved exceptional scores. Benefitting from the redesigned 3D cache that allows for overclocking the processor and even improving the general creative performance alongside gaming, it is a rather versatile solution for your gaming PC.

CPU-Z April hardware statistics

With the processors selling thousands of units during their release period, it’s great to see them actually featured at the top of the list instead of being held off for scalping. It’s not the perfect method of showcasing the true market share, but at least it’s a good insight into the DIY market. It’s most likely not as effective as the Steam hardware survey, but it’s a great insight into it.

In the survey, the 9800X3D sits at 4.3% in the CPU category split, a good insight into actual processors in comparison to CPUs, unlike Steam, which just shows cores. The 5600X follows suit with a 2.1% split and loses 8.9% in comparison to the year-to-year change. As the 7800X3D and 5700X3D sit high too, even with the latter’s late appearance on the market, with a surprising lack of the 5800X3D (but its end of life is likely a contributor to that).

Even with AMD taking all but one of the top 10 slots, it’s surprising that Intel is still holding onto the number one overall. According to CPU-Z’s stats, it still holds 56.3% but is losing that year on year, as AMD gained 16% to sit at 43.7%. With Intel not having any strong competition recently, we expect that the lead will keep diminishing.
