Baldur’s Gate 3 finally gets a mod for tank class mains, and it’s everything you’d hoped for

Table of Contents
Baldur’s Gate 3 has one of the best modding communities right now, and we are no strangers to this, as we've covered several mods that add so much new content to the game. However, one of the main criticisms surrounding Baldur’s Gate 3’s combat is that while the combat itself is incredible, there isn't a ‘true’ tank in the game, someone who takes on heavy damage and protects their teammates. Well, that has now changed thanks to a new mod.
This new Valiant Class mod made by Avyre essentially introduces a group of strong melee fighters to the game that come with a bunch of custom skills, passives, and icons. The mod is available for download on Mod.io and, at the time of writing, has already garnered over 200 downloads.
A ton of unique abilities to play with
The Valiant mod comes with three distinct subclasses: Serpent, Maelstrom, and Bulwark. We’ll dive into the first two later, but for now, let’s focus on Bulwark, which is the tank of the group. According to the description, Bulwarks are the frontlines of defense, standing guard and protecting themselves and allies with shields and heavy armor. This subclass features several unique abilities, such as Raise Shields, Shield Slam, Spirit Shield, and a ton more.

There are many more effects and abilities Bulwarks have to offer, so we highly recommend checking out this video from BG3 creator Jay Dunna, where he covers each of these in detail. Apart from Bulwark, the Serpent subclass specializes in poison and shadows, using abilities like Toxic Charges, while Maelstrom can set enemies on fire and cover the battlefield in flames or holy fire with the Maelstrom ability.
A lot more is expected to come
That said, this is just a quick look at the mod, and there's a lot more for you to explore. According to the creator, the mod is also set to receive a few updates. Currently, the biggest gap in the mod is that The Valiant doesn't have progression from level 13 to level 20, as the creator's intention was to make a class that is fun and rewarding to play up to level 12 before attempting to balance it.
My design philosophy when it comes to classes has always been ‘make a class that is fun and feels rewarding to play to level 12’ and then ‘attempt to balance the class’. This inevitably leads to the class being a bit over tuned at first as they get a lot of tools to work with, so definitely leave your feedback on what’s fun, what’s not, and feedback on the classes relative power level. My goal for this class is to be around the power level of a multiclassed build from the default classes. I never liked the fact that some classes were never used past level 5 or 6, so I want it to be rewarding and powerful for sticking with it to level 12.

Apart from that, we also recommend going through the General Information section on the official Mod.io page, as it includes a lot of important details about each of the subclasses.
