Ever since Larian Studios opened up Baldur’s Gate 3 developer tools in Patch 7 last year, modders have been getting more ambitious with their creations. One of the largest and most anticipated custom campaigns is one we’ve been following closely – Path to Menzoberranzan. A few months back, the team behind the mod was keen on showing more off after reaching their “first working build,” but outside of their Patreon – locked behind a paywall, they’ve been pretty quiet.

Not a whole lot has been discussed publicly, but it seems like that’s about to change. The developers have finally issued another update about the progress of the mod, celebrating one year of the project (they’ve been going since September 20, 2024) and hitting 1,000 followers on their Patreon. There still isn’t much to show, but it’s an exciting time for Path of Menzoberranzan.

What started as a project to rebuild one area of Baldur’s Gate II has turned into something much bigger. There’s a lot of support behind this custom campaign; the fan-made project aims to offer a standalone adventure that is separate from the Absolute War in BG3. So far, fans have been able to make their mark by creating a community-made NPC. For those who want to get more involved, a number of new roles have opened up, too.

One more thing to announce: we’re opening up Programmer, User Experience, and Design applications! If you’ve got the skillset for these roles, we encourage you to apply! Job descriptions can be found in the applications. Here are the roles we’re recruiting for: Technical Department:

Now that Summer is over and the project seems to be more in order, we can expect to see more reveals from the developers. Hopefully not just on Patreon, either, but we’ll have to wait and see. At the very least, the devs have been teasing more character reveals soon on the way, including “a man resembling Frankenstein’s monster” in time for Halloween.

A ton of hard work has been put into these fan-made projects ever since patch 7 arrived with official mod support. Months later, we got patch 8, which adds cross-play, but don’t expect Path to Menzoberranzan on console any time soon. In any case, it’s an exciting time for BG3 fans looking for new content to tuck into.

Another custom campaign worth following is The Grand Theater, which has more than 600 modding hours behind it already.
